Get Access To All JobsFinance CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do all finance internships qualify for CPT authorization?
Not automatically. Your DSO must confirm the role is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum, not just related to your major. Roles in financial modeling, accounting, risk analysis, or investment research typically satisfy this requirement when tied to a specific course or practicum. General office or administrative finance work without a clear academic link may not qualify.
Can I do a finance CPT role at a boutique firm or startup?
Yes, employer size doesn't affect CPT eligibility. What matters is that the employer can provide a legitimate offer letter describing your duties and that those duties connect to your coursework. Smaller firms may be unfamiliar with CPT paperwork requirements, so bring a clear explanation of what the authorization involves and what the employer needs to provide.
How do I find finance employers who are open to hiring CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for finance roles filtered by employers with active LCA filing history. Companies that file LCAs regularly understand work authorization processes and are more likely to have HR workflows that accommodate CPT. Rotational programs at banks, asset managers, and accounting firms also tend to be more familiar with international student hiring.
Does full-time CPT during a finance internship affect my OPT?
Yes. Twelve or more months of full-time CPT, counted cumulatively across all CPT authorizations, eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not count toward this limit regardless of how many semesters you use it. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT hours carefully from the start.
What job titles in finance typically qualify for CPT?
Roles with direct ties to finance coursework are the most straightforward to authorize. These include financial analyst intern, investment research associate, accounting intern, risk management analyst, corporate finance associate, and FP&A intern. O*NET classifies most of these under financial analyst or accountant occupation profiles, which your DSO may reference when reviewing curricular relevance. General business support or data entry roles are harder to justify.
