Does a Tax Manager role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position is an integral part of your established curriculum in accounting, taxation, finance, or a related graduate program. Your school must have a cooperative education program or internship requirement that covers the role. Positions in public accounting, corporate tax planning, and international tax advisory commonly satisfy this standard, but your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program requirements.
Can I do CPT for a Tax Manager role while completing a graduate tax program part-time?
CPT requires you to be enrolled full-time as an F-1 student, and twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't affect OPT. If you're in a part-time graduate tax program, confirm with your DSO whether your enrollment status qualifies for CPT before accepting any offer.
What documents do I need to start a Tax Manager CPT job?
You need a new or updated I-20 with CPT authorization endorsed by your DSO, showing the specific employer name, start date, and end date. The employer needs this I-20 plus your existing visa stamp and I-94 record for I-9 verification. Some firms also request a CPT offer letter formatted with exact job title, location, and duties to support your DSO's authorization decision.
How do I find Tax Manager roles that support CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Tax Manager positions filtered by employers with documented work authorization filing history, which helps you identify firms already familiar with CPT and F-1 students. When outreaching directly, focus on Big Four and national accounting firms, multinational corporate tax departments, and regional firms with established campus recruiting programs, since these employers are most likely to have HR staff who understand CPT authorization requirements.
Does CPT as a Tax Manager affect my path to H-1B sponsorship?
CPT itself doesn't affect H-1B visa eligibility, but it does affect your OPT timeline if you use full-time CPT for twelve months or more. If you lose OPT eligibility, you lose access to the STEM OPT extension, which is the work authorization buffer most F-1 students rely on while waiting for H-1B cap selection. Structured correctly, CPT in a Tax Manager role can build the employer relationship and specialty occupation documentation needed for a future H-1B petition.
