Get Access To All JobsCommercial Lender CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Commercial Lender role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position involves duties that directly relate to your finance, business, or economics degree program and your school treats it as an integral part of your curriculum. Roles covering credit analysis, loan underwriting, or client risk assessment typically meet this standard. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring a detailed job description to your authorization meeting.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Commercial Lender without affecting OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT is authorized CPT that totals 12 months or more at full-time hours. Using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not affect OPT. If you're planning to use OPT or STEM OPT after graduation, structure your Commercial Lender CPT as part-time wherever possible.
What documents do I need to start a Commercial Lender CPT job?
You need a valid I-20 with CPT authorization on page two listing your employer's name, the CPT start and end dates, and the authorized hours. Your employer will also need a valid EAD or CPT-authorized I-20 to complete Form I-9. Keep copies of your offer letter and enrollment verification, since some lending employers request both for compliance files.
How do I find Commercial Lender employers who are familiar with CPT hiring?
Employers with existing LCA filing history are generally more comfortable with work authorization requirements. Migrate Mate lets you filter by employers who have previously sponsored visa statuses, making it easier to identify financial institutions already familiar with employment verification and work authorization documentation for international students.
Does CPT work experience as a Commercial Lender count toward H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. CPT employment is authorized work experience, and time spent in a Commercial Lender role can strengthen an H-1B visa petition by demonstrating real-world application of your finance degree. The role needs to meet the specialty occupation definition under USCIS guidelines, meaning it typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as finance or accounting.
