Get Access To All JobsAccountant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does CPT work as an accountant count toward CPA exam experience requirements?
It depends on the state board. Some states accept supervised accounting experience from CPT roles toward the one to two years of work experience required for CPA licensure, but the supervising CPA must hold an active license and the duties must meet the board's definition of qualifying experience. Confirm eligibility with your state's Board of Accountancy before your start date.
Can I do part-time CPT as an accountant while taking a full course load?
Yes. Part-time CPT is defined as 20 hours or fewer per week and does not affect your OPT eligibility, regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT, which is more than 20 hours per week for 12 months or more, eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so most F-1 students in accounting programs structure CPT positions as part-time during the academic year.
What job duties qualify an accountant role for CPT authorization?
Your DSO will look for a direct connection between the job duties and your current coursework. Roles involving financial statement preparation, tax return processing, audit support, or management accounting analysis typically qualify for accounting and finance students. General administrative or data entry tasks alone usually don't. Ask your employer to specify accounting-specific duties in the offer letter you submit to your DSO.
How do I find accountant employers who already understand CPT hiring?
Employers with prior DOL Labor Condition Application filings for accounting roles have already worked through the documentation process for F-1 employees and are familiar with work authorization forms. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified LCA filing history for accounting positions, which is a practical filter for identifying firms that won't be caught off guard by your CPT authorization paperwork.
Does my CPT accountant role need to be at a CPA firm, or can it be in industry?
CPT authorization is not limited to public accounting firms. Corporate accounting roles at banks, healthcare systems, technology companies, and government contractors all qualify as long as the duties connect to your curriculum and your DSO approves the specific position. Industry accounting roles can be particularly valuable because they often provide broader exposure to ERP systems and management reporting that public firm internships don't cover.
