Cybersecurity Intern Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cybersecurity intern in California?
The most direct path is enrolling in a cybersecurity or computer science program at a California university or community college, then applying to intern positions during your second or third year. California does not require a state-issued license to work as a cybersecurity intern. Building a portfolio through capture-the-flag competitions, platforms like TryHackMe, or California community college cybersecurity labs strengthens applications considerably. Industry certifications like CompTIA Security+ signal readiness to California employers screening early-career candidates.
How much do cybersecurity interns make in California?
Cybersecurity interns in California earn a median of about $138,570 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $66,070 for the lowest 10% to over $221,000 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cybersecurity interns in California?
Employers hiring cybersecurity interns in California right now include ByteDance, TikTok, and CAMP Systems International, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of defense contractors, major tech platforms, and large health systems means cybersecurity intern programs here tend to be structured, team-embedded experiences rather than ad hoc assignments.
Which California cities have the most cybersecurity intern jobs?
San Jose, San Francisco, and Garden Grove have the most cybersecurity intern openings in California. The San Francisco Bay Area and San Jose dominate because of the dense concentration of enterprise security vendors and large tech headquarters there, while Los Angeles draws openings from entertainment, aerospace, and healthcare employers that maintain substantial security operations in the region.
Are there remote cybersecurity intern jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 9% of cybersecurity intern openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much security monitoring, analysis, and documentation work can be done off-site. Roles focused on security operations center analysis, threat intelligence, and compliance tend to be the most remote-accessible, while positions involving physical infrastructure or hardware are typically on-site.
How can I get hired as a cybersecurity intern in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to structured intern programs at large California employers before you have professional experience. Companies like Northrop Grumman, Cisco, and Kaiser Permanente run early-identification programs open to students with coursework but no job history. California community colleges also offer cybersecurity apprenticeship pipelines in partnership with regional employers. Completing a recognized certification like CompTIA Security+ and building a project portfolio through academic labs or open-source contributions consistently moves candidates past initial screening.
Where can I find and apply to cybersecurity intern jobs in California?
You can find and apply to cybersecurity intern jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers actively hiring. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that match.
