Data Management Specialist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data management specialist in California?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in information management, computer science, or a related discipline, followed by hands-on experience with databases and data governance tools. California has no state-issued license for this role, but employers in regulated sectors like healthcare and finance often expect familiarity with California Consumer Privacy Act requirements. Certifications from DAMA International, such as the Certified Data Management Professional credential, carry weight with California hiring managers and can substitute for some experience.
How much do data management specialists make in California?
Data management specialists in California earn a median of about $113,060 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,410 for the lowest 10% to over $178,310 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data management specialists in California?
Employers hiring data management specialists in California right now include TikTok, Pacific Gas and Electric, and Driscoll's, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large tech headquarters, integrated health systems, and state agencies means demand is spread across both private-sector and public-sector organizations with complex, ongoing data operations.
Which California cities have the most data management specialist jobs?
Los Angeles, San Jose, and Irvine have the most data management specialist openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its dense concentration of enterprise technology companies and cloud platform headquarters, while Los Angeles draws demand from entertainment, healthcare, and financial services firms, and Sacramento generates consistent volume from state government agencies and health-plan administrators.
Are there remote data management specialist jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields, because data management work is largely analytical and platform-based rather than tied to a physical site. About 16% of data management specialist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly employers have embraced distributed data teams. Data governance, metadata management, and reporting roles tend to be the most consistently remote, while roles involving on-site system integration or regulatory audit support are more likely to require an office presence.
How can I get hired as a data management specialist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a data analyst or junior database administrator role, which many California health systems, county governments, and large tech employers treat as a pipeline into data management. Kaiser Permanente, the California Department of Technology, and major university health systems run new-graduate and rotational programs that include data operations rotations. Building a portfolio with projects demonstrating SQL, data cleaning, or a governance framework strengthens applications significantly, and an entry-level DAMA or Google Data Analytics certificate can substitute for work experience in many California screening processes.
Where can I find and apply to data management specialist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to data management specialist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries and experience levels. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly.
