Data Science Intern Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data science intern in California?
No state-issued license or certification is required to work as a data science intern in California. Most candidates secure internships while enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program in data science, statistics, computer science, or a related quantitative field at a California university. Building a portfolio of projects on GitHub, completing a Kaggle competition, or earning a recognized credential such as a Google Data Analytics or AWS Cloud Practitioner certification strengthens applications with California employers.
How much do data science interns make in California?
Data science interns in California earn a median of about $141,590 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,480 for the lowest 10% to over $224,920 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data science interns in California?
Employers hiring data science interns in California right now include TikTok, ByteDance, and PlusAI, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of technology headquarters, biotech firms, and entertainment companies means structured intern cohorts are common, giving candidates exposure to large-scale production data environments.
Which California cities have the most data science intern jobs?
San Jose, Santa Clara, and San Francisco have the most data science intern openings in California. San Francisco and the broader Bay Area dominate because of its concentration of major technology and AI research companies, Los Angeles draws from entertainment, aerospace, and a growing tech corridor, and San Diego's biotech and defense clusters drive consistent demand for analytical interns.
Are there remote data science intern jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 9% of data science intern openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how naturally this work translates to distributed environments. Tasks centered on modeling, analysis, and visualization are most commonly offered remotely, while internships involving proprietary hardware, lab environments, or embedded team collaboration are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a data science intern in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to structured undergraduate intern programs at large California technology and biotech companies, many of which explicitly recruit candidates with no prior professional experience. Employers such as major Bay Area technology firms and San Diego biotech companies run cohort-based programs designed for early-stage students. Adjacent roles like data analyst assistant, research assistant, or business intelligence intern at California universities or smaller startups serve as effective stepping stones, and a portfolio of two or three completed projects demonstrating Python, SQL, and visualization skills gives a clear edge over a blank resume.
Where can I find and apply to data science intern jobs in California?
You can find and apply to data science intern jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across technology, biotech, finance, and other industries. Find roles that fit your experience and education level and apply directly to each employer.
