Tips for Your Data Science Intern Job Search
Tailor your resume to the stack
Many data science intern listings name specific libraries like scikit-learn, PyTorch, or pandas. Mirror the exact tool names from each job posting in your resume's skills and project sections, since applicant tracking systems filter on these terms before a human reads anything.
Lead with project outcomes, not tasks
Recruiters skip resumes that say 'analyzed data.' Instead, write what changed because of your analysis: a model that improved prediction accuracy by a measurable amount, or a dashboard that replaced a manual weekly report. Concrete results beat process descriptions every time.
Post your notebooks and code publicly
A public GitHub repository with clean, commented notebooks does more for a data science intern application than a generic portfolio site. Include a brief README on each project explaining the business problem you solved, the dataset, and the method you chose and why.
Filter openings by required versus preferred skills
Data science intern postings often list ten or more qualifications, but half are labeled preferred. Apply when you meet the required skills, even if your preferred-skill count is low. Hiring managers expect interns to be building toward the preferred list, not already there.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists data science intern openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing. Applying within the first week of a posting going live consistently improves your odds of a callback.
Prepare a coding and case interview separately
Data science intern interviews almost always include a SQL or Python coding screen and a separate analytical case where you interpret a dataset aloud. Practice each format independently, since the skills they test differ enough that cramming both at once leaves gaps in your preparation.
Data Science Intern Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most data science interns?
TikTok, Lyft, and Nuclear are hiring the most data science interns right now, with openings concentrated in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Technology, financial services, and healthcare companies tend to post the highest volume of data science intern roles year-round.
How many data science intern jobs are remote?
About 58% of data science intern openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, making it one of the more flexible internship categories. Machine learning research and analytics engineering roles within that group are the most likely to offer fully remote arrangements, while roles tied to on-premise data infrastructure tend to require some in-office presence.
How do you become a data science intern?
Build a foundation in Python and SQL, then complete at least two independent data projects you can share publicly on a code repository. Take a statistics or machine learning course to add formal methodology to your hands-on work. Apply to roles that list your current tools as required rather than preferred, write a targeted cover letter connecting your projects to the company's domain, and prepare for both a coding screen and an analytical case interview.
Can you get a data science intern role with little experience?
Yes, many data science intern roles are designed for candidates who are still building their skills. Employers hiring first-time interns care more about your ability to work with data in Python or SQL than about prior professional experience. A strong academic project, a Kaggle competition entry, or a self-directed analysis of a public dataset can substitute for work history, especially when you document your methodology and results clearly.
What does the data science intern interview process look like?
Most data science intern interviews follow a pattern of three to four stages. An initial recruiter screen focuses on background and fit. A technical phone or video screen tests Python, SQL, or statistics fundamentals with short coding problems. A take-home assignment or live coding challenge follows, often involving an exploratory analysis of a provided dataset. Final-round interviews combine a presentation of your take-home work with behavioral questions about how you approach problems and communicate findings.
Where can I find and apply to data science intern jobs?
You can find and apply to data science intern jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your skills, tools, and preferred location, then apply directly to each one that fits. New openings are added regularly, so checking back frequently gives you access to postings before they receive a high volume of applicants.
