Tips for Your Public Relations Intern Job Search
Tailor your resume to PR outputs
Hiring managers for public relations intern roles want to see clips, press releases, pitch emails, or media lists you've built, not just coursework. Replace generic bullet points with concrete deliverables, even if they came from class projects or volunteer work.
Build a short writing portfolio now
Most PR intern applicants skip a portfolio because they lack agency experience. Compile two or three writing samples, a mock press release, a pitch, or a published article, and host them as a simple PDF or free web page you can link in applications.
Target roles by communication specialty
Public relations intern listings vary widely: some focus on media pitching, others on social content, internal communications, or event support. Filter openings by the specialty you want so you're applying where your samples are the strongest match.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists public relations intern openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for an editorial skills test
Many PR intern interviews include a writing exercise, often a short press release or media pitch written on the spot or sent back within 24 hours. Practice drafting tight, newsy ledes and boilerplate company descriptions before your interview so the format feels familiar.
Follow up with a relevant news hook
After an interview, send a follow-up note that references a recent news story relevant to the organization's work. It signals real media awareness and reinforces the core skill PR teams hire for, which makes your note more memorable than a standard thank-you.
Public Relations Intern Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most public relations interns?
The companies hiring the most public relations interns right now include Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Amazon, and Center for Strategic and International Studies, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Georgia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Openings are concentrated at PR agencies, large consumer brands, nonprofits, and entertainment companies.
How many public relations intern jobs are remote?
About 32% of public relations intern openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible entry-level communication roles. Social media-focused and content-heavy intern positions tend to have the highest remote availability, while roles involving media events, press tours, or on-site client work are more likely to require in-person attendance.
How do you become a public relations intern?
Start by enrolling in or completing coursework in communications, public relations, or journalism, since most listings expect at least some college-level writing training. Build a portfolio of writing samples such as press releases, pitches, or published articles, even from class or volunteer projects. Then target openings that match your specialty, submit your resume and portfolio together, and follow up promptly after each application.
Can you get a public relations intern job with little experience?
Yes, many public relations intern roles are designed for candidates with no professional PR history, but you need to show writing ability and media awareness. Substitute professional clips with class projects, campus newspaper bylines, nonprofit press releases you drafted, or a mock media pitch you created for practice. Agencies and in-house teams hiring first-time interns care most about clear writing, a working knowledge of the news cycle, and genuine curiosity about the stories their clients tell.
What does the public relations intern interview process look like?
Most public relations intern interviews move through a phone or video screen with a recruiter or coordinator, followed by a writing exercise or take-home assignment such as a short press release or media pitch. A final round typically involves a conversation with a senior team member or account lead where you discuss your samples and walk through how you'd approach a real campaign scenario. The whole process usually wraps within two to three weeks.
Where can I find and apply to public relations intern jobs?
You can find and apply to public relations intern jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your specialty, location preference, and availability, then apply directly to each opening that fits. No separate sign-up step is required before you apply.
