Tips for Your Consulting Intern Job Search
Frame your resume around deliverables
Consulting firms screen for impact, not activity. Replace task descriptions with outcomes: cost reduced, process improved, analysis completed in X days. If you lack work experience, pull quantified results from class projects, case competitions, or research.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists consulting intern openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Tailor your cover letter to the firm type
A Big Four accounting firm, a boutique strategy shop, and an internal corporate consulting team each want different things. Name the specific service line or industry practice you're applying to and tie your background directly to it.
Prepare a structured case answer format
Most consulting intern interviews include at least one case. Practice structuring your answer before you calculate: state the problem, lay out your framework, then work through the numbers. Jumping to analysis first is one of the most common ways candidates lose points.
Target firms where your academic focus matches
Consulting internships are heavily filtered by industry fit. If your coursework is in supply chain, target operations practices. If it's in life sciences, focus on healthcare consulting groups. Generic applications to all practice areas rarely convert.
Follow up after the final round interview
Send a thank-you note to each interviewer within 24 hours, referencing a specific point from your conversation. If you haven't heard back by the stated decision date, one brief follow-up email is appropriate and often expected in consulting recruiting.
Consulting Intern Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most consulting interns?
The companies hiring the most consulting interns right now include RSM, EY, and Plante Moran, with the largest share of openings in New York, Illinois, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Openings shift frequently, so checking current listings gives you the most accurate picture of where demand is highest.
How many consulting intern jobs are remote?
About 89% of consulting intern openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, though the share varies by firm type and engagement model. Strategy and operations roles tied to client site work tend to be more in-person, while research, analytics, and internal consulting functions offer the most remote flexibility.
How do you become a consulting intern?
Start by building a resume that emphasizes structured problem-solving, quantitative coursework, and any project work with measurable outcomes. Participate in case competitions to practice the interview format consulting firms use. Apply to firms aligned with your industry focus, tailor each application to the specific practice area, and prepare for both fit and case interviews before your first round.
Can you get a consulting intern role with little experience?
Yes, but you need to make class projects, research, and extracurriculars do the work your resume would otherwise lack. Consulting firms recruit heavily from universities, so strong academic performance, a well-structured case interview, and involvement in business or consulting clubs can offset a thin work history. Boutique and internal corporate consulting teams are often more open to candidates earlier in their programs than large strategy firms.
What does the consulting intern interview process look like?
Most consulting intern processes include a resume screen, a behavioral or fit interview, and one or more case interviews. Fit questions assess why you want consulting and how you handle ambiguity. Case interviews test your ability to structure a business problem, analyze data, and communicate a recommendation clearly. Some firms add a written case or group exercise. The process typically runs two to three rounds before an offer decision.
Where can I find and apply to consulting intern jobs?
You can find and apply to consulting intern jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your background, industry interest, and location, then apply directly to each one that fits.
