Tips for Your Consulting Intern Internship Search
Apply earlier than you think necessary
Large consulting employers recruit summer interns the preceding fall, so applications for June start dates often open in September and October. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to their start dates. Check listings consistently rather than waiting for a single season.
Build evidence before your first application
Consulting intern hiring teams expect limited work history, so your proof comes from documented projects. Develop a case study, a structured market or operations analysis, or a slide deck that shows how you frame problems and reach recommendations. A concrete deliverable gives recruiters something to evaluate where a resume alone cannot.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured consulting programs tied to your university, and your professors and career center staff often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach and catches openings that never come through official recruiting channels.
Practice case interviews out loud before you apply
Most consulting intern interviews include a case component where interviewers assess how you structure ambiguous business problems, not just whether you reach the right answer. Practice walking through your reasoning aloud, structuring your approach before diving into analysis, and communicating clearly under time pressure. How you think matters as much as your conclusion.
Target structured consulting internship programs early
Many larger consulting and professional services firms run formal summer analyst or associate programs designed to train people new to the field. These cohort programs recruit early, often months before independent internship listings appear, and fill fast. Identify the programs that match your background and apply in the first wave of recruitment.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 14% of the consulting intern internships listed here. Decide what you can commit to before you start applying so you are not sorting through roles you cannot take. Filter by location and work type on Migrate Mate to see only the listings that fit your situation from the start.
Consulting Intern Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a consulting intern internship?
Lead with coursework, personal projects, and a portfolio rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited prior experience at the intern level. For consulting intern candidates, a documented case study, structured analysis, or slide deck that shows your problem-solving process gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for candidates they meet in person.
Can a consulting intern internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for consulting intern interns is performance on real project deliverables, available headcount on the team, and the employer's return-offer timeline. Focus on doing the work well and building relationships without counting on a full-time outcome from the start.
When should I apply for consulting intern internships?
Earlier than most expect. Large employers recruit summer consulting intern interns the preceding fall, meaning applications often open in September and October for roles that start the following June. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to their start dates, so openings appear throughout the year. Check listings regularly rather than waiting for a single recruitment season.
Are consulting intern internships paid?
Most professional consulting intern internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show it where the employer chooses to disclose it. Unpaid arrangements are more common at early-stage startups or nonprofit organizations, so review each listing carefully before applying.
What should a consulting intern internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that show your analytical or problem-solving process, name the tools and frameworks you used, and link to the deliverable where possible, whether that is a published analysis, a case write-up, or a slide deck. Add relevant coursework, and keep the resume to one page.
Are there remote consulting intern internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 86% of the consulting intern internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill quickly, so apply early once you decide what setup fits your situation. Filter by work type to surface only the listings you can realistically take.
Can international students get consulting intern internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
