Tips for Your Summer Associate Job Search
Tailor your resume to the firm
Summer associate hiring committees read hundreds of resumes. Mirror the firm's language from their website and recent deal announcements in your bullet points. A resume written for a boutique M&A shop reads differently than one for a Big Law litigation department.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists summer associate openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prioritize your writing sample quality
Many law and consulting summer associate applications require a writing sample. Choose a piece that shows analytical precision, not just length. Edit it specifically for the role, cutting anything that signals a different practice area than the one you're targeting.
Reach out before the application deadline
Attorneys and analysts who interviewed at a firm the previous summer are often willing to share honest feedback on what the culture and work actually look like. That context helps you write a more specific cover letter and ask sharper questions during your own interview.
Prepare deal- or case-specific talking points
Summer associate interviewers routinely ask which recent transactions or cases you followed and why. Have two or three ready that genuinely connect to the practice group you're targeting. Generic answers about the firm's reputation rarely land well.
Follow up with a specific thank-you note
Send a thank-you email within 24 hours of each interview and reference one specific topic you discussed. Interviewers compare notes, and a note that names a real moment in the conversation stands out from the generic ones that arrive in bulk.
Summer Associate Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most summer associates?
The companies hiring the most summer associates right now include Prisma Health, University Settlement Society of New York, and Acme Markets, with the largest share of openings in South Carolina, New York, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in law firms, investment banks, and management consulting practices.
How many summer associate jobs are remote?
About 2% of summer associate openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though most firms expect in-person attendance for the majority of the summer. Research and document-review roles within law firms tend to offer the most scheduling flexibility compared to transactional or client-facing positions.
How do you become a summer associate?
You become a summer associate by applying during your first or second year of law school, or during your MBA program. Start by identifying firms whose practice areas align with your interests, then submit a targeted resume, cover letter, and writing sample through each firm's application portal. Callbacks typically lead to office visits with multiple interview rounds before an offer is extended.
Can you get a summer associate offer with little experience?
Yes, firms expect first-year students and early MBA candidates to have limited professional experience. What matters most is demonstrating strong analytical writing, genuine interest in the specific practice area, and the ability to work under pressure. Highlighting relevant coursework, law review membership, moot court participation, or undergraduate research can substitute effectively for years of work history.
What does the summer associate interview process look like?
The summer associate interview process typically starts with an on-campus screening interview conducted by firm recruiters or attorneys, followed by a callback round held at the firm's office. Callback interviews usually involve multiple one-on-one or small-group conversations with associates and partners across different practice groups. Interviewers assess fit, communication, and your understanding of the firm's work rather than testing technical legal knowledge.
Where can I find and apply to summer associate jobs?
You can find and apply to summer associate jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your practice area interests and class year, then apply directly to each position that fits.
