Tips for Your Summer Associate Job Search
Tailor your resume to each practice area
Summer associate programs often sort candidates by practice group, so your resume needs to signal a clear fit for the specific team, whether that's M&A, litigation, or strategy consulting. Generic resumes get screened out early.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists summer associate openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Lead your cover letter with a specific tie
Hiring committees for summer associate roles read hundreds of letters that open with 'I am passionate about finance.' Name the specific deal, case, or project that connects your background to this firm's recent work instead.
Prepare structured stories for behavioral rounds
Summer associate interviews lean heavily on behavioral questions that test judgment under pressure. Map two or three real experiences from school or work to common themes like leadership, conflict resolution, and client interaction before your first call.
Research the firm's recent work before every interview
Interviewers expect you to know what the firm has been doing. Review recent deals, cases, or engagements in your target practice area so you can ask informed questions and connect your skills to their actual work.
Send a specific follow-up note within 24 hours
A generic thank-you note does nothing. Reference one topic from the conversation that stuck with you, then connect it to a specific reason you want to work on that team. Interviewers remember candidates who were clearly paying attention.
Summer Associate Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most summer associates?
The most active employers for summer associates right now are Navy Federal Credit Union, Clark Construction, and Grant Thornton, and the most openings are in Virginia, California, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Demand tends to be highest in law, banking, and consulting.
How many summer associate jobs are remote?
About 65% of summer associate openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, though most programs still expect in-person attendance for the core of the summer. Remote availability is highest in corporate research, policy, and technology-adjacent associate roles.
How do you become a summer associate?
Secure enrollment in a graduate program such as a JD or MBA, then apply directly to firms during their formal recruiting cycles, which typically open in the fall or early spring. Submit targeted application materials, complete screening interviews, and then on-site or video final-round interviews. Strong academic standing and relevant prior experience are the two factors that move candidates furthest in the process.
Can you get a summer associate role with no prior experience?
Yes, especially at the first-year level where firms recruit students who have not yet completed a prior internship in that industry. Emphasize transferable skills from academic projects, clinical work, or part-time roles, and demonstrate clear interest in the practice area through coursework, competitions, clinics, or pro bono work. A compelling cover letter that explains your pivot into the field carries significant weight when your resume is light.
What does the summer associate interview process look like?
Most programs run two to three rounds, starting with a screening call or video interview focused on your background and motivation, followed by a behavioral and case-based round with senior staff. Some firms add a writing exercise or technical assessment. Candidates who advance typically receive an offer within a few weeks of the final round, though timelines vary by firm size and practice area.
Where can I find and apply to summer associate jobs?
You can find and apply to summer associate jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your program, practice area, and location, then apply directly to each listing.
