What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in mechanical engineering intern jobs.
- Currently enrolled in a mechanical engineering or related engineering bachelor's or master's program
- Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Creo
- Experience with simulation or analysis tools such as ANSYS, MATLAB, or CATIA
- Completed coursework in statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, or materials science
- Ability to read and produce engineering drawings and GD&T specifications
- Familiarity with prototyping, testing, or hands-on lab work in an academic or project setting
Tips for Your Mechanical Engineering Intern Job Search
Tailor your resume to the discipline
Mechanical engineering internships split across thermal, structural, and manufacturing tracks. Highlight the CAD tools, simulation software, or lab techniques that match the specific subdiscipline in each posting, rather than listing every tool you have touched.
Show project outcomes, not just coursework
Hiring managers scan for evidence of applied work. For each academic or personal project, name the design constraint you solved, the method you used, and a measurable result, even if that result is a prototype passing a load test.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists mechanical engineering intern openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by software stack
Many postings specify SolidWorks, ANSYS, MATLAB, or Creo as requirements. Searching by those keywords surfaces roles aligned to your actual skills and cuts time spent reading postings that need a different toolset.
Prepare for a technical screening round
Most mechanical engineering intern interviews include a problem-solving round covering statics, materials, or thermodynamics fundamentals. Review free-body diagrams, stress-strain relationships, and heat transfer basics so you can work through questions aloud without hesitation.
Follow up with a specific observation
A post-interview thank-you that references a technical challenge the team mentioned, rather than a generic note, signals genuine interest. Keep it to two sentences and send it within 24 hours of the interview.
Mechanical Engineering Intern Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most mechanical engineering interns?
The companies hiring the most mechanical engineering interns right now include Holtec International, Michael Baker International, and Intercontinental Exchange, with the largest share of openings in California, Georgia, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially concentrated in aerospace, automotive, and industrial manufacturing sectors.
How many mechanical engineering intern jobs are remote?
About 21% of mechanical engineering intern openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than most software roles because the work often requires access to physical equipment, test rigs, or manufacturing floors. Sub-areas like simulation, FEA modeling, and technical documentation are the most likely to offer remote or hybrid flexibility.
How do you become a mechanical engineering intern?
Start by completing foundational coursework in statics, thermodynamics, and materials science, then build hands-on experience through senior design projects, university labs, or personal builds. Develop proficiency in at least one CAD and one simulation tool, assemble a portfolio of two or three documented projects, and apply to internship postings that align with your subdiscipline before the semester recruiting cycle closes.
Can you get a mechanical engineering internship with little experience?
Yes, many mechanical engineering intern roles are designed for students with limited professional experience. Employers hiring early-stage interns focus on your coursework trajectory, lab participation, and evidence of self-directed projects rather than prior industry work. Applying to roles at smaller manufacturers or research labs often yields more openings for candidates who are earlier in their academic program.
What does the mechanical engineering intern interview process look like?
Most mechanical engineering intern interview processes run two to three rounds. An initial phone or video screen covers your background and fit, followed by a technical round where you work through applied engineering problems drawn from statics, materials, or thermodynamics. Some employers add a practical component, such as reviewing a drawing or describing how you would approach a design constraint, before a final conversation with the team.
Where can I find and apply to mechanical engineering intern jobs?
You can find and apply to mechanical engineering intern jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your subdiscipline, location preference, and skill set, then apply directly to each one that fits.
