Tips for Your Accounting Intern Job Search
Tailor your resume to each posting
Accounting intern postings vary widely between audit, tax, and bookkeeping roles. Mirror the exact terminology each listing uses, whether that's 'general ledger reconciliation,' 'accounts payable,' or 'financial statement preparation,' so your resume clears automated screening tools.
Highlight relevant coursework and software
List specific courses like cost accounting, financial reporting, or auditing alongside any hands-on exposure to QuickBooks, SAP, or Excel pivot tables. Employers scanning intern resumes weight proven technical familiarity heavily when work history is limited.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists accounting intern openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target firms by their busy seasons
Public accounting firms hire interns to support January through April tax season and a separate summer audit cycle. Apply to tax-track roles in October and November and to audit-track roles in August and September to align with when teams actually need help.
Prepare for technical screening questions
Many accounting intern interviews include a short technical screen covering debits and credits, the accounting equation, or basic ratio analysis. Review these fundamentals before your first round so you can answer confidently without pausing to reconstruct them.
Follow up after your interview strategically
Send a thank-you note within 24 hours that references a specific topic from your conversation, such as a software tool the team uses or a project they mentioned. This signals genuine interest and keeps you distinct from other candidates who send generic follow-ups.
Accounting Intern Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most accounting interns?
The companies hiring the most accounting interns right now include BDO, Goldman Sachs, and MGM Resorts International, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Openings are distributed across public accounting firms, corporate finance departments, and government agencies.
How many accounting intern jobs are remote?
About 24% of accounting intern openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though on-site placements remain common for roles involving physical document handling or in-person client work. Tax-preparation and financial analysis support roles tend to have the highest share of remote and hybrid flexibility among accounting intern positions.
How do you become an accounting intern?
Enroll in an accounting, finance, or business degree program, as most employers require current student status. Build proficiency in Excel and at least one accounting software platform. Prepare a resume that highlights relevant coursework and any bookkeeping or finance experience. Then apply directly to openings that match your current skill level and preferred specialty, whether audit, tax, or general accounting.
Can you get an accounting intern job with little or no experience?
Yes, accounting intern roles are specifically designed for candidates early in their education, so direct work experience is rarely required. Employers focus instead on your coursework, your familiarity with accounting software, and your attention to detail. Volunteer bookkeeping for a campus organization, a student-managed investment fund, or a nonprofit treasurer role can substitute effectively for paid experience on your application.
What does the accounting intern interview process look like?
Most accounting intern interviews run two to three rounds. The first is typically a brief recruiter or HR phone screen to confirm your enrollment status and availability. A second round with a team manager or senior accountant covers technical fundamentals like the accounting equation, journal entries, and basic financial statements. Some firms add a short written or Excel-based exercise before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to accounting intern jobs?
You can find and apply to accounting intern jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your skills, preferred location, and area of accounting, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
