Tips for Your Software Engineer Intern Job Search
Tailor your resume to each stack
Recruiters screening software engineer intern applications filter hard on language and framework keywords. Match the exact tools in each job description, whether that's React, PyTorch, or Go, so your resume clears automated screening before a human ever reads it.
Build one polished GitHub project
A single well-documented repository with a clear README, working demo, and commit history signals more than a list of coursework. Hiring managers for software engineer intern roles click GitHub links, so make sure yours loads and runs.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists software engineer intern openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target companies with structured programs
Internship programs with defined cohorts, mentors, and project scopes give you real deliverables to describe in future interviews. When researching openings, look for postings that mention team rotations, dedicated mentorship, or end-of-term presentations as signals of a structured experience.
Practice coding interviews with time constraints
Software engineer intern technical screens almost always include a timed coding problem on a shared editor. Replicate that pressure in practice, working through data structures and algorithm problems with a timer running, not in a relaxed read-and-solve mode.
Follow up with your recruiter contact
After a software engineer intern interview, send a short follow-up email within 24 hours referencing a specific problem you solved or technology you discussed. It distinguishes you from candidates who go quiet and signals genuine interest in that team's work.
Software Engineer Intern Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most software engineer interns?
The companies hiring the most software engineer interns right now include TikTok, Michael Baker International, and Holtec International, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New Jersey, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Openings shift frequently, so checking current listings gives you the most accurate picture of where demand is highest.
How many software engineer intern jobs are remote?
About 18% of software engineer intern openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting a meaningful but not dominant share of the market. Remote availability tends to be highest for roles focused on backend development and data engineering, while hardware-adjacent and embedded systems internships are more likely to require an on-site presence.
How do you become a software engineer intern?
Start by building a foundation in at least one programming language through coursework or self-directed projects, then create a GitHub portfolio that demonstrates working, documented code. Prepare for technical screens by practicing data structures and algorithm problems under timed conditions. Apply to openings that match your current skill level, target companies with structured internship programs, and follow up after each interview with a specific reference to the work discussed.
Can you get a software engineer intern job with little or no experience?
Yes, many software engineer intern roles are explicitly designed for candidates with limited professional experience, prioritizing demonstrated learning ability and project work over a prior job history. A strong coursework project, an open-source contribution, or a personal app with a public repository can substitute for internship experience. Apply to roles that list foundational skills in the requirements rather than previous internship experience, as those postings are written with first-time applicants in mind.
What does the software engineer intern interview process look like?
Most software engineer intern interview processes begin with a recruiter screen to confirm basic fit, followed by one or two technical rounds that include a timed coding problem on a shared editor and sometimes a system design or debugging question. Some companies add a brief behavioral round or a take-home assignment. The full process typically runs across several days to a few weeks depending on the company's hiring cycle and how quickly candidates complete each stage.
Where can I find and apply to software engineer intern jobs?
You can find and apply to software engineer intern jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your skills and location preferences, then apply directly to each opening that fits. New postings are added regularly, so checking back often gives you the best chance of catching roles as soon as they go live.
