Tips for Your Civil Engineering Intern Job Search
Tailor your resume to the discipline
Structural, transportation, and environmental civil engineering intern roles each emphasize different coursework and software. Highlight AutoCAD or Civil 3D for transportation roles, STAAD or SAP2000 for structural, and EPA stormwater tools for environmental. Generic resumes lose out to ones that match the discipline.
Show field experience, even unpaid
Employers treat surveying labs, campus construction projects, and volunteer infrastructure work as real field experience. List any time you used field equipment, collected site data, or performed soil tests. Internship panels consistently weigh hands-on exposure over GPA alone.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists civil engineering intern openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by project type before applying
Job titles for civil engineering interns often look identical, but the actual work varies sharply between a municipal water utility, a private DOT contractor, and a commercial real estate developer. Read the project descriptions carefully and prioritize firms whose active project portfolio matches your target discipline.
Prepare for design-software screening questions
Many firms ask you to walk through a real task in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or HEC-RAS during interviews. Practice narrating your steps aloud on a sample problem before the interview so you can demonstrate competency without hesitation, even if your classroom experience is limited.
Follow up after on-campus or career-fair conversations
Civil engineering recruiting cycles at larger firms often start at fall career fairs. If you spoke with a recruiter or engineer, send a short email within two business days referencing the specific project or office location you discussed. That specificity moves your application out of the general pile.
Civil Engineering Intern Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most civil engineering interns?
The companies hiring the most civil engineering interns right now include Michael Baker International, Braun Intertec, and Intertek, with the largest share of openings in California, Florida, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Infrastructure consulting firms and state transportation departments consistently represent a large portion of active postings.
How many civil engineering intern jobs are remote?
About 22% of civil engineering intern openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than most other engineering disciplines because the role typically involves site visits, field measurements, and in-office CAD work. Sub-areas like traffic data analysis, environmental report writing, and hydrological modeling are the most likely to offer partial remote flexibility.
How do you become a civil engineering intern?
Start by completing foundational coursework in statics, fluid mechanics, and materials science, then build proficiency in AutoCAD or Civil 3D. Seek out student project teams, campus construction initiatives, or part-time survey crew work for field exposure. Apply to openings that align with your target discipline, whether structural, transportation, or environmental, and prepare to walk through relevant coursework and any software you have used during your interview.
Can you get a civil engineering internship with little or no experience?
Yes, many firms hire civil engineering interns at the freshman or sophomore level specifically because they expect to train you on their workflows and software. Emphasize relevant coursework, lab work, and any hands-on exposure like campus engineering competitions or surveying labs. Targeting smaller regional firms and municipal agencies often yields more entry-level openings than large national contractors, which tend to prefer candidates further along in their programs.
What does the civil engineering intern interview process look like?
Most civil engineering intern interviews follow two to three stages. A recruiter or HR screen typically comes first, covering your program, availability, and interest in the firm. A technical round with one or two engineers follows, where you can expect questions about coursework, software familiarity, and how you approach a basic design or calculation problem. Some firms add a brief take-home exercise or ask you to walk through a past project or lab report before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs?
You can find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from companies across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your discipline, location, and schedule, then apply directly to each one that fits. No separate signup is needed to apply.
