Tips for Your Construction Intern Job Search
Tailor your resume to field roles
Highlight any hands-on coursework, lab work, or site visits from your program. Hiring managers on construction intern roles look for exposure to blueprints, safety protocols, or materials testing, so lead with those details rather than general academic achievements.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists construction intern openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target general contractors over subcontractors first
General contractors rotate interns across estimating, scheduling, and field supervision, giving you broader exposure. Subcontractor internships often focus on a single trade, which is valuable but narrower, so sequence your applications based on what skills you want to build first.
Get your OSHA 10 before you apply
Many construction intern postings list an active OSHA 10-Hour Construction card as a requirement, not a preference. Completing it before you apply removes a common screening hurdle and signals that you can step onto a job site on day one.
Show software familiarity on your application
Procore, Bluebeam, and AutoCAD appear repeatedly in intern job descriptions. Even a class project or self-taught tutorial counts. Name the specific tools and describe what you did with them so reviewers don't have to guess at your skill level.
Prepare to walk through a project scenario
Construction intern interviews often include a scenario question, such as how you'd flag a safety concern or handle a materials discrepancy on site. Review your coursework for a concrete example you can walk through step by step, including what you observed, what you did, and what the outcome was.
Construction Intern Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most construction interns?
The companies hiring the most construction interns right now include Michael Baker International, Intertek, and Hill International, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Pennsylvania, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. General contractors and large civil engineering firms consistently post the highest volume of intern roles throughout the year.
How many construction intern jobs are remote?
About 6% of construction intern openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the largely site-based nature of the industry. The sub-areas most likely to include remote or hybrid components are estimating, project document control, and scheduling support, where work can be completed through project management software without requiring a physical presence on site.
How do you become a construction intern?
Start by enrolling in or actively pursuing a degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field, since most employers require current enrollment. Complete your OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification, which is a frequent screening requirement. Build familiarity with industry software like Procore or Bluebeam through coursework or self-study, then apply to openings that match your program stage and specialization interest.
Can you get a construction intern job with no experience?
Yes, many construction intern roles are designed for students with no professional site experience. Employers expect to teach field procedures on the job, so your application should focus on relevant coursework, lab or studio projects involving materials or structural concepts, any campus construction observation opportunities, and soft skills like attention to detail and physical readiness for site work. An OSHA 10 card strengthens an otherwise thin application considerably.
What does the construction intern interview process look like?
Most construction intern interviews involve an initial phone or video screen with a recruiter or HR coordinator, followed by a technical or behavioral interview with a project manager or superintendent. Expect questions about how you read drawings, how you'd handle a safety observation on site, and what software you've used. Some firms add a brief written exercise or ask you to walk through a past project or coursework assignment in detail.
Where can I find and apply to construction intern jobs?
You can find and apply to construction intern jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your program, location preference, and specialization, then apply directly to each one that fits.
