Tips for Your Accounting Intern Internship Search
Apply in the fall for summer accounting intern roles
Large employers open summer accounting intern applications as early as September, months before the internship starts. Waiting until spring puts you behind candidates already in final rounds. Set a reminder to search for summer openings at the start of each fall semester and submit before November where possible.
Build project evidence before you apply
Accounting intern hiring teams expect limited work history, so documented projects carry more weight than a long resume. Build two or three complete examples, a financial model, a budget analysis, a case study with clear assumptions, that show the tools you used and the output you produced. These give recruiters something concrete to evaluate.
Combine campus recruiting with direct applications
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and recruiters there often move faster for students they meet in person. Your professors and career center staff frequently know which accounting employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to smaller companies running their own cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach.
Practice the accounting intern interview format out loud
Most accounting intern screens include a mix of technical questions on accounting concepts, behavioral prompts, and sometimes a case or numerical exercise. Practice answering out loud, not just in your head, because interviewers weigh how you reason through a problem as much as the final answer. Run through sample questions with a classmate or career center advisor before your first interview.
Target structured accounting intern programs early
Large firms and corporations run cohort-based accounting intern programs, including Big Four rotational internships and corporate finance development programs, designed specifically for candidates new to the field. These programs recruit early, fill their cohorts fast, and offer the most structured mentorship. Identify the ones that match your goals and apply in the first week applications open.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 29% of the accounting intern internships listed here. Decide what you can commit to before you start applying, then filter by location and work type on Migrate Mate so you spend your time on roles that actually fit your situation rather than sorting through listings you cannot accept.
Accounting Intern Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an accounting intern internship?
Lead with coursework and projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at this stage. For accounting intern candidates, a documented sample, a reconciliation project, a financial model, or a case analysis showing the tools you used, gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Combine direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can an accounting intern internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for accounting intern interns is performance on real assigned work, available headcount on the team, and the employer's return-offer timeline. The safest approach is to treat every project as your best work and ask your manager early what a strong intern looks like, without counting on an offer.
When should I apply for accounting intern internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers recruit summer interns the preceding fall, sometimes as early as September or October, so missing that window often means waiting a full year for the next cohort. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to their actual start dates, which means openings appear year-round and reward consistent searching rather than a single annual push.
Are accounting intern internships paid?
Most professional accounting intern internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, so the range is wide. Listings show pay where the employer discloses it, and you can filter by disclosed compensation to focus your search on roles that share that information upfront.
What should an accounting intern internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that show the tools you used and what you produced, for accounting intern candidates, that means financial models, reconciliation exercises, budget analyses, or case studies you can describe in detail or share on request. Add relevant coursework, list technical tools like Excel, QuickBooks, or ERP software, and keep the whole document to one page.
Are there remote accounting intern internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 71% of the accounting intern internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast, so apply early and filter by work type to see them without sorting through every listing.
What is a Big Four accounting internship?
Big Four internships at the largest public accounting firms are structured, cohort-based programs designed to train students new to professional accounting. They target penultimate-year undergraduates, recruit heavily through campus events in the fall, and are among the most competitive accounting intern opportunities available. Applying in the first wave of recruiting season, before interview slots fill, significantly improves your chances of moving forward.
Can international students get accounting intern internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
