Job Description
The Communications Systems and Spectrum Division (CSSD) within the Information and Communications Lab (ICL) is seeking an Electrical and Computer Engineering Intern starting Fall 2026.
Work with our research engineers to investigate, assess and develop adaptive wireless communications systems. Have you ever wanted to work in advanced wireless communications areas such as 5G, IoT, or Wi-Fi? Want to work with tactical radio and commercial systems? You will get to learn skills in these areas to propel your career forward. If you have a good handle on the basics of ECE and are good at learning new things, then you already have the basic knowledge to get started here. We train our students with a positive attitude and work ethic into full-time employees upon graduation.
Your tasks will include: The position will include some aspects of design/integration and some aspects of testing and assessment. Assist in testing and building software and hardware for 5G, embedded systems, servers and systems. Test and build solutions at application, network and/or physical layers. You will learn how to use RF test equipment, work with modern programming tools and applications, and interface with embedded software, systems and sensors. Other expectations include documentation and drawing support to effectively communicate your work and the team’s work.
GTRI’s Information and Communications Lab (ICL) Communications Systems and Spectrum Division (CSSD) researches and develops military-grade wireless communications. ICL CSSD fuses multiple technologies including software-defined radio, FPGAs, 5G, circuit board design, 3D printing, and UAVs to solve our customer’s most challenging problems.

Tips for Your Electrical Engineering Intern Internship Search
Apply earlier than your classmates do
Large employers in defense, semiconductors, and power systems open summer internship applications in August or September and close cohorts well before the new year. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so checking listings regularly through spring catches opportunities the fall-focused search misses.
Build a portfolio before you apply
Hiring teams for electrical engineering intern roles expect limited work history and look for project evidence instead. Document two or three complete projects, a PCB design, an embedded systems build, a MATLAB simulation, name every tool you used, and link to schematics, GitHub repositories, or CAD files so recruiters can assess your work directly.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured internship programs tied to your university, and professors or career center staff often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside campus activity widens your reach beyond the firms that attend your fair.
Practice technical screens before you submit applications
Electrical engineering intern interviews typically include a technical screen covering circuit analysis, signals fundamentals, or embedded systems concepts, sometimes alongside a practical design problem. Practice out loud, explaining your reasoning step by step, because interviewers weigh how you approach a problem as much as whether you reach the correct answer.
Target structured rotational and university programs first
Large manufacturers, utilities, and defense firms run rotational internship programs built to train students new to industry, rotating interns across hardware, power, and test engineering teams within a single cohort. These programs recruit early and fill fast, so identify the ones aligned with your interests and get applications in during the first wave.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 67% of the electrical engineering intern internships listed here. Decide what you can commit to, on-site, hybrid, or remote, before you start sorting through listings. Filtering by work type and location up front on Migrate Mate means you spend time on roles you can actually take rather than reading through postings that don't fit your situation.
Electrical Engineering Intern Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an electrical engineering intern internship?
Lead with coursework, personal projects, and a portfolio rather than work history, hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. A documented portfolio of circuit designs, embedded systems projects, or CAD schematics gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where electrical engineering recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can an electrical engineering intern internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for electrical engineering intern candidates is consistent performance on real project work, available team headcount at the end of the term, and return-offer timing set by the employer. Treat a return offer as a possible outcome to work toward, not a certainty to plan around.
When should I apply for electrical engineering intern internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers, defense contractors, semiconductor firms, and utilities, recruit summer interns the preceding fall, often filling cohorts by November or December. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to the start date, so openings appear year-round. Check listings regularly rather than waiting for a single hiring season.
Are electrical engineering intern internships paid?
Most professional electrical engineering intern internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, larger employers in defense, semiconductors, and energy tend to offer stronger packages than smaller firms or nonprofits. Where an employer discloses pay, the listing will show it so you can compare before applying.
What should an electrical engineering intern internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that name the tools used, microcontrollers, MATLAB, Altium, SPICE simulators, or whatever you actually worked with, and link to schematics, GitHub repositories, or CAD files where the work is visible. Add relevant coursework in circuits, signals, or power systems and keep the whole document to one page.
Are there remote electrical engineering intern internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 33% of the electrical engineering intern internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast because they draw applicants from across the country, so apply early once you decide remote works for your situation, and use the work-type filter to surface them without sorting through every listing.
What is a rotational engineering intern program?
Rotational engineering internships, offered by large manufacturers, utilities, and defense firms, place interns across two or more functional teams, such as hardware design, power systems, and test engineering, within a single term or across sequential semesters. They target students new to industry, build broad exposure quickly, and recruit early. Applications typically open in late summer or early fall for the following summer, so identify programs that fit your interests and apply in the first wave.
Can international students get electrical engineering intern internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
