Who's Hiring

Tips for Your Data Science Intern Internship Search
Apply in the fall for summer internships
Large employers open summer data science intern cohorts as early as August and September the year before, months ahead of the start date. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to when they need someone. Checking listings consistently through fall and winter puts you ahead of candidates who wait until spring.
Build a portfolio before you apply
Hiring teams for data science intern roles expect limited work history and assess candidates on project evidence instead. Document two or three end-to-end projects that show data cleaning, analysis, and a clear result, name every tool and library you used, and link the code or notebook so recruiters can read what you actually built.
Work your campus network alongside direct applications
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied directly to your university, and professors or career center staff often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Apply directly to smaller companies running their own cohorts at the same time so you're not limited to programs with campus partnerships.
Practice your technical screen out loud before applying
Data science intern interviews typically include a coding screen covering Python, SQL, and sometimes statistics or probability questions. Practice working through problems while explaining your reasoning aloud, not just arriving at the answer, because interviewers weigh how you think through ambiguity as much as whether the final output is correct.
Target structured rotational programs early
Many larger technology and financial services employers run cohort-based rotational internship programs designed specifically for people entering data science for the first time. These programs offer structured mentorship and multi-team exposure, but they recruit in the fall and fill fast. Identify the ones that match your background and apply in the first wave.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 33% of the data science intern internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to before you start sorting through openings, then filter by location and work type so you're only reviewing roles you can actually accept.
Data Science Intern Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a data science intern internship?
Lead with coursework and personal projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. A portfolio of documented analyses, linked code repositories, or published notebooks gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a data science intern internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What drives it is performance on real project work, available headcount on the team, and how early you signal interest in returning. Treat the internship as a long interview, deliver on your assigned work, and stay open to an offer without counting on one.
When should I apply for data science intern internships?
Earlier than most expect. Large employers recruit summer interns the preceding fall, so applications for June start dates often open in August and September. Smaller companies and co-op programs post much closer to start dates. Because openings appear year-round, checking listings consistently matters more than waiting for a single hiring season.
Are data science intern internships paid?
Most professional data science intern internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show pay where the employer discloses it. Unpaid arrangements are far less common in technical fields and are typically limited to academic credit arrangements at specific institutions.
What should a data science intern internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that name the tools and libraries you used and link to the code, published analysis, or notebook where recruiters can see the actual work. Add relevant coursework in statistics, machine learning, or programming below that. Keep the whole document to one page.
Are there remote data science intern internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 67% of the data science intern internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast, so apply early and filter by work type to see them before they close.
What is a rotational data science internship program?
Several large technology and financial services employers run structured rotational internship programs that move data science interns through two or three team placements over one summer. These programs are built for people new to the field, offer structured mentorship and cross-functional exposure, and recruit early in the fall. Competition is high, so identify the programs that fit and apply in the first wave.
Can international students get data science intern internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
