What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in electrical engineering intern jobs.
- Currently enrolled in an electrical engineering or related undergraduate or graduate degree program
- Proficiency with circuit simulation tools such as MATLAB, LTspice, or Cadence
- Experience with embedded systems programming in C or C++ on microcontroller platforms
- Hands-on familiarity with lab equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, and function generators
- Understanding of PCB design principles and exposure to tools like Altium Designer or Eagle
- Strong foundation in circuit analysis, signal processing, or power electronics from coursework
Tips for Your Electrical Engineering Intern Job Search
Tailor your resume to the lab
Swap generic project descriptions for specifics: name the microcontrollers you programmed, the simulation tools you used, and the test equipment you operated. Recruiters screening electrical engineering intern applications look for tool names like MATLAB, LTspice, and Cadence before reading anything else.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists electrical engineering intern openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by hardware versus software focus
Electrical engineering intern postings split hard between firmware-heavy roles and bench-heavy roles. Read the required skills section carefully. Applying to a role that needs oscilloscope experience when your background is RTL design wastes both your time and the recruiter's.
Show coursework as a proxy for experience
If you have limited professional experience, list relevant lab courses by what you built or measured, not just the course title. A power electronics lab where you designed a DC-DC converter demonstrates hands-on competency that a GPA alone does not convey.
Prepare for technical screening rounds
Many electrical engineering intern interviews include a short take-home circuit problem or a live question on Ohm's law applications, op-amp configurations, or basic filter design. Review your circuits and electronics fundamentals before any phone screen, not just before an on-site.
Follow up with a targeted note
After an interview, reference one specific technical topic from your conversation in your follow-up message. Mentioning the exact design challenge or tool the team discussed signals genuine interest and helps interviewers recall your conversation when comparing multiple candidates.
Electrical Engineering Intern Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most electrical engineering interns?
The companies hiring the most electrical engineering interns right now include International Paper, Holtec International, and Michael Baker International, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Michigan, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Defense contractors, semiconductor manufacturers, and utilities consistently maintain the largest intern cohorts throughout the year.
How many electrical engineering intern jobs are remote?
About 13% of electrical engineering intern openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than many other engineering disciplines because most roles require hands-on lab or hardware work. Sub-areas with the highest remote share include firmware development, FPGA programming, and simulation-focused design roles that rely primarily on software tools.
How do you become an electrical engineering intern?
Enroll in an accredited electrical engineering program and complete foundational coursework in circuits, electronics, and signals. Build hands-on experience through university labs, personal projects, or student design teams like IEEE or Formula SAE. Develop proficiency in at least one simulation tool and one programming language, then apply to openings that match your current coursework level.
Can you get an electrical engineering intern role with little experience?
Yes, many companies recruit first and second-year students specifically because they expect minimal professional experience. Strengthen your application by listing lab course projects with concrete outcomes, linking to a GitHub repository with any embedded or simulation work, and applying to smaller companies or utilities where competition for intern spots is less intense than at large technology firms.
What does the electrical engineering intern interview process look like?
Most electrical engineering intern interviews begin with a recruiter screen focused on enrollment status and availability dates. A technical round follows, typically covering circuit fundamentals, basic filter or op-amp problems, and questions about tools or coursework listed on your resume. Final rounds at larger employers may include a case problem or a short design exercise reviewed by an engineering manager.
Where can I find and apply to electrical engineering intern jobs?
You can find and apply to electrical engineering intern jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your skills and availability, then apply directly to each one that fits.
