Development Director Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a development director job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's dense nonprofit corridor, major hospital systems on the Near North Side and Michigan Avenue medical district, and the city's large network of universities and cultural institutions. Candidates with demonstrated major gifts experience, established donor relationships in the Chicago philanthropic community, and a history of leading capital campaigns stand out most. Attending events hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Illinois Chapter builds targeted local visibility.
Which companies hire development directors in Chicago?
Companies currently hiring development directors in Chicago include AutoZone, Google, and Deloitte, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's market is especially deep in large nonprofit organizations, health systems, and research universities, all of which maintain dedicated development offices staffed at multiple levels.
Are there remote development director jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though remote availability is limited for development directors since donor cultivation and major gift work depends heavily on in-person relationship-building. About 33% of development director openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements more common than fully remote. Portfolio management, grant writing oversight, and strategy roles tend to offer the most schedule flexibility in the Chicago market.
How can I get a development director job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is moving up from a major gifts officer or development manager role at one of the city's mid-size nonprofits, hospital foundations, or neighborhood community development organizations. Organizations in Pilsen, Bronzeville, and the South Side often hire emerging development professionals and provide hands-on fundraising experience. Building a giving portfolio and earning a CFRE credential strengthens a Chicago candidacy at the director level.
Which industries hire the most development directors in Chicago?
Chicago development director roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Manufacturing, and Accounting & Auditing, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's status as a national hub for large nonprofit networks, academic medical centers, and world-class cultural institutions drives consistently high demand across these sectors.
