JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Mechanic for the Asphalt and Paving Shop is an advanced journey-level position responsible for the expert maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a specialized fleet of asphalt paving equipment and heavy-duty diesel trucks. Beyond technical execution, the Senior Mechanic serves as a technical lead, providing mentorship to junior mechanics and ensuring that the paving crew's high-stakes equipment—including pavers, rollers, and milling machines—operates at peak efficiency to minimize downtime during critical paving windows. This role requires a safety-first mindset and the ability to perform complex repairs in both shop and field environments.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Utilize advanced electronic diagnostic software and precision testing equipment to identify malfunctions in engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
- Diagnose and repair high-pressure hydraulic systems, including pumps, control valves, cylinders, and motors specifically found on asphalt pavers and screed systems.
- Troubleshoot and rewire complex electrical systems, including sensors, computerized engine controls, and lighting for night-time paving operations.
- Perform complete teardowns and rebuilds of diesel engines, transmissions, and final drive units.
- Maintain a diverse fleet including CAT/Volvo pavers, rollers (pneumatic and steel drum), asphalt distributors, skid steers, and milling machines.
- Perform precision adjustments and repairs to paver screeds, conveyor systems, and augers to ensure consistent material flow and mat quality.
- Oversee and execute the PM schedule, ensuring all lubrication, oil analysis, and safety inspections are completed.
- Function as a lead worker, providing training and technical guidance to Maintenance Mechanics and Welders.
- Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to document work orders, track parts usage, and manage equipment history.
- Research and order critical components, maintaining a lean inventory of 'high fail' parts to ensure rapid turnaround on repairs.
- Perform emergency roadside or job-site repairs under tight deadlines.
- Conduct pre-shift safety inspections and ensure all repairs meet company and federal safety standards.
- Utilize oxy/acetylene torches and stick/MIG welding equipment to fabricate parts or perform structural repairs on trailers and plant equipment.
- Lead by example in the 'Guardian Angel' safety culture, identifying and mitigating hazards before they lead to incidents.
- Able to work from elevated platforms and confined spaces.
- Able to work outdoors in varied weather conditions or in a shop environment.
- Able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
- Actively participate in the hazard recognition program by documenting near-misses and implementing safety improvements.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience; Trade School certification or Associate's Degree in Diesel Technology preferred.
CDL Class A, preferred
Must Supply own working set of mechanic tools (check with local shop for specific details)
Work Experience
3+ years of Heavy Equipment/Diesel Maintenance experience, with at least 2 years specifically focused on asphalt/paving equipment.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for plant maintenance and equipment servicing.
Required to bend, stoop, climb, and reach. You must be able to maintain three points of contact when climbing on/off machinery or on ladders.
Strong hand-eye-foot coordination is essential for operating hand/foot controls. You must have good depth perception with or without seeing aid for distances up to 150 feet.
Working Conditions
All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.

The hiring range for this position is $33 -$44 exclusive of benefits or bonuses (discretionary and non-discretionary). The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience. Additionally, at Martin Marietta we place a high value on internal pay equity and will consider the compensation for those in similarly situated roles and direct team members. The hiring range for this role represents the base compensation we expect to pay for the position at time of hire and does not represent the total possible base pay of the position.
