Diesel Mechanic Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a diesel mechanic in New York?
New York does not require a statewide diesel mechanic license, but most employers expect a high school diploma or equivalent plus completion of a diesel technology program at a vocational school or community college such as SUNY Delhi or Erie Community College. Earning ASE certifications, particularly in medium and heavy truck repair, strengthens your candidacy significantly. New York State also issues motor vehicle inspection licenses through the DMV, which many transit and fleet employers require.
How much do diesel mechanics make in New York?
Diesel mechanics in New York earn a median of about $70,100 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $48,360 for the lowest 10% to over $90,090 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire diesel mechanics in New York?
Employers hiring diesel mechanics in New York right now include Ryder System, Interstate Waste Services, and First Student, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large public transit systems, long-haul freight carriers, and municipal fleet operations make it one of the more active states for sustained diesel mechanic hiring throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most diesel mechanic jobs?
The cities with the most diesel mechanic openings in New York are Bronx, Cheektowaga, and Liverpool. New York City leads because of the MTA's enormous bus and rail fleet maintenance needs, while Buffalo and Albany see consistent demand driven by freight corridors along I-90 and I-87, regional distribution hubs, and municipal vehicle fleets that require year-round upkeep.
Are there remote diesel mechanic jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Diesel mechanics work directly on engines and mechanical systems, so the overwhelming majority of roles require on-site presence in a shop, depot, or yard. About 0% of diesel mechanic openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are typically in technical support, parts consulting, or fleet management coordination rather than hands-on repair.
How can I get hired as a diesel mechanic in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a paid apprenticeship or technician trainee program with a large fleet operator. MTA New York City Transit and the New York State Department of Transportation both recruit entry-level mechanical trainees and offer structured on-the-job training. Vocational graduates can also start as lube technicians or parts room associates at dealerships and regional freight carriers, then move into full repair roles. Completing an ASE Student Certification before applying gives candidates a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to diesel mechanic jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to diesel mechanic jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state updated in real time. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and location, then apply directly to the employers posting them. No account or profile is needed to see the openings.
