Carpenter Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a carpenter in New York?
New York does not require a statewide carpenter license, but the most direct path is completing a registered apprenticeship through the New York City District Council of Carpenters or the Empire State Regional Council of Carpenters, which leads to journeyperson status recognized by union and non-union contractors alike. A high school diploma or equivalent is the standard education baseline, and OSHA safety training is expected on nearly every commercial site.
How much do carpenters make in New York?
Carpenters in New York earn a median of about $72,330 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,860 for the lowest 10% to over $122,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire carpenters in New York?
Employers hiring carpenters in New York right now include Guy Carpenter, Northwell Health, and ABM Industries, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's pipeline of large-scale public and private construction projects keeps demand from major general contractors and specialty subcontractors consistently active throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most carpenter jobs?
New York, Manhasset, and Copiague lead for carpenter openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its constant cycle of commercial, residential, and infrastructure projects, while Buffalo benefits from ongoing investment in manufacturing facilities and civic redevelopment, and Albany draws demand from state government construction and capital-region commercial growth.
Are there remote carpenter jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Carpentry is fundamentally hands-on site work, so fully remote roles make up a small fraction of the market. About 20% of carpenter openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are typically estimating, project coordination, or shop-drawing review roles rather than field carpentry.
How can I get hired as a carpenter in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is applying to a pre-apprenticeship program through the New York City District Council of Carpenters or a regional council affiliate, which accepts applicants without prior experience and pairs them with paid on-the-job training. Large general contractors such as Turner Construction and Skanska USA also hire carpenter helpers and laborers who work alongside journeypersons. Completing an OSHA 10-hour construction safety course before applying gives candidates a concrete advantage.
Where can I find and apply to carpenter jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to carpenter jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly through the listings.
