Automotive Technician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a automotive technician in New York?
You become an automotive technician in New York by completing a vocational or technical education program, then obtaining a New York State DMV Inspection Mechanic license if you plan to perform vehicle inspections, which requires passing a written and practical exam administered by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Most employers also expect ASE certification in at least one specialty. Programs at SUNY community colleges and trade schools across the state offer the foundational training most New York shops look for when hiring.
How much do automotive technicians make in New York?
Automotive technicians in New York earn a median of about $60,220 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,100 for the lowest 10% to over $81,770 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire automotive technicians in New York?
Employers hiring automotive technicians in New York right now include Goodyear, Empire Automotive, and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense mix of franchised dealerships, regional fleet operators, and independent multi-shop groups means technician openings are distributed well beyond the city and into suburban and upstate markets.
Which New York cities have the most automotive technician jobs?
The cities with the most automotive technician openings in New York are Rochester, Albany, and Buffalo. New York City leads because of its sheer volume of registered vehicles, dealership clusters, and commercial fleet operators, while Buffalo and Albany anchor upstate hiring through regional dealer groups and municipal fleet maintenance programs that run year-round.
Are there remote automotive technician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Automotive technician work is fundamentally hands-on and tied to a physical service bay, so the role is one of the least remote-friendly in the trades. About 0% of automotive technician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve technical training, warranty documentation review, or remote diagnostics support rather than direct vehicle repair.
How can I get hired as a automotive technician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a lube technician or tire technician role at a franchised dealership or national service chain, where structured on-the-job training is built into the position. Large New York dealer groups and chains such as Penske Automotive Group run apprenticeship-style onboarding for candidates without prior shop experience. Enrolling in an automotive service program at a SUNY community college and earning even one entry-level ASE certification significantly improves your candidacy, as does a New York State DMV Inspection Mechanic license, which signals readiness for a full service role.
Where can I find and apply to automotive technician jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to automotive technician jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state right now. Find roles that match your certifications, preferred location, and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
