- Minimum two years of hands-on experience in a professional automotive repair environment

Tips for Your Automotive Technician Job Search
List every ASE certification you hold
Hiring managers filter by certification area before reading anything else on your resume. List each ASE credential with its exact designation, not just 'ASE certified,' so your application clears automated screening for the specific systems the shop works on.
Tailor your resume to shop type
A dealership prioritizes brand-specific training and OEM scan tool experience, while an independent shop wants broad diagnostic range and familiarity with aftermarket parts. Match your resume's language to the employer type, not a one-size-fits-all template.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists automotive technician openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target openings that name your diagnostic tools
Job postings that call out specific scan tools like Snap-on ZEUS, Autel, or OEM dealer software signal which shops invest in equipment. Applying to those roles first, and mentioning your hands-on experience with those exact tools, separates you from generalist candidates.
Bring a portfolio of documented repairs to interviews
Photos, repair orders, or brief write-ups of complex diagnostic cases you resolved give interviewers concrete proof of your skill level. A callback count or a tough driveability diagnosis you traced to root cause tells a much stronger story than credentials alone.
Negotiate flag hours and lift access separately
Pay structure varies widely between flat-rate, hourly, and hybrid shops, and the assigned lift bay affects your earning potential directly. Ask about average weekly flag hours and lift availability before accepting an offer, not after your first paycheck.
Automotive Technician Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most automotive technicians?
The companies hiring the most automotive technicians right now include Asbury Automotive, Goodyear, and Group 1 Automotive, with the largest share of openings in Florida, Texas, and Massachusetts, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Dealership groups and national service chains tend to post the highest volume of openings at any given time.
How many automotive technician jobs are remote?
About 1% of automotive technician openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most roles in the field. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote or flexible arrangements include technical training development, warranty claims administration, and remote diagnostic support for fleet telematics programs.
How do you become an automotive technician?
Start by completing a vocational program or an associate degree in automotive technology at a community college, which covers engine systems, electrical diagnostics, and shop safety. After graduation, entry-level positions at dealerships or independent shops let you log the real-world hours needed to sit for ASE certification exams. Passing ASE tests in your specialty areas, then advancing toward master technician status, is the clearest path to higher-skill roles and better compensation.
Can you get hired as an automotive technician with little or no experience?
Yes, many shops hire lube technicians, tire installers, and service assistants with no prior professional experience as a direct path into the trade. Completing a vocational program first makes you a stronger candidate even for entry-level openings, because employers can start you on billable work faster. Dealerships with apprenticeship programs are often the most willing to hire candidates who are still building their hours toward ASE eligibility.
What does the automotive technician interview process look like?
Most shops begin with a phone or in-person screening focused on your certification status, the tools you own, and the vehicle types you have worked on. A hands-on skills assessment or a walk through the shop floor is common at the second stage, where the service manager evaluates your diagnostic approach on a real or simulated vehicle concern. Final conversations typically cover pay structure, productivity expectations, and scheduling before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to automotive technician jobs?
You can find and apply to automotive technician jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Find roles that match your certification level, specialization, and preferred location, then apply directly to each listing without being redirected to a separate platform.
