Position Summary
The Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the preventive maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of company fleet vehicles and equipment, including trucks, vans, forklifts, and related equipment. This position performs mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, suspension, HVAC, and emissions-system repairs while ensuring vehicles and equipment remain safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable regulations.
Essential Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair breakdowns, malfunctions, and other mechanical issues involving company vehicles and equipment.
- Perform operational tests to verify reported vehicle or equipment concerns prior to beginning repairs.
- Diagnose and repair diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, clutches, steering and suspension systems, fuel and ignition systems, electrical systems, brakes, HVAC systems, and emissions systems.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems and lift-gate equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance, including fluid changes, lubrication, safety inspections, brake service, and other scheduled maintenance.
- Perform required DOT and Pennsylvania vehicle inspections in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Conduct final operational and safety tests following repairs to ensure vehicles and equipment are operating properly.
- Inspect vehicles and equipment to identify additional safety concerns or repairs that may be required.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and perform roadside repairs when necessary.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, preventive maintenance, and other fleet-service activities.
- Operate forklifts and other equipment as necessary to perform assigned duties.
- Follow all company safety procedures, applicable regulatory requirements, and manufacturer specifications.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications (Required or Willing to Obtain)
- High school diploma/GED and completion of heavy-duty diesel/mechanical training or a minimum of five years of related heavy-duty diesel/fleet mechanic experience.
- Current and valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A).
- Current Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection License, as required for the position.
- Current DOT inspection certification, as applicable.
- Demonstrated experience diagnosing and repairing heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, steering, hydraulics, electrical systems, and emissions systems, including DPF and EGR systems.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to read and follow technical manuals, manufacturer specifications, and repair procedures.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to:
- Stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, kneel, and work in various positions for extended periods.
- Push, pull, grasp, and manipulate tools and equipment.
- Perform repetitive hand and wrist movements associated with mechanical repairs.
- Lift and carry up to 100 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Work in varying temperatures and conditions, including outdoor environments and around operating vehicles and equipment.
- Safely work around heavy equipment, vehicles, tools, and mechanical systems.
