Diesel Technician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a diesel technician in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license to work as a diesel technician, so the typical path starts with completing a diesel technology program at a community college or technical school, such as those offered at Texas State Technical College campuses. Most employers then require or strongly prefer ASE certification in medium or heavy trucks. Candidates who complete an employer-sponsored apprenticeship or vocational program alongside their ASE credentials are consistently the most competitive for full-time shop positions.
How much do diesel technicians make in Texas?
Diesel technicians in Texas earn a median of about $58,810 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $40,930 for the lowest 10% to over $81,660 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire diesel technicians in Texas?
Employers hiring diesel technicians in Texas right now include Penske Truck Leasing, Cummins, and Performance Foodservice, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of regional trucking terminals, oilfield service companies, and large municipal fleets means hiring is active across both metro areas and rural service corridors throughout the state.
Which Texas cities have the most diesel technician jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Odessa have the most diesel technician openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its density of oilfield equipment operators, port logistics companies, and freight carriers, while Dallas-Fort Worth's massive distribution and e-commerce infrastructure drives steady demand, and San Antonio's large military installation support operations and regional trucking hubs add consistent volume.
Are there remote diesel technician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Diesel technician work is inherently hands-on, so the overwhelming majority of openings require on-site presence in a shop, yard, or field location. About 5% of diesel technician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are almost exclusively in technical support, warranty claims coordination, or service management roles rather than bench diagnostics or repair.
How can I get hired as a diesel technician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a lube technician or tire technician role at a commercial truck dealership or fleet maintenance center, which gives hands-on shop exposure without requiring prior diesel experience. Texas State Technical College and Lone Star College both offer diesel technology programs that large regional carriers and dealerships actively recruit from. Rush Enterprises and Peterbilt dealerships in Texas run apprenticeship tracks for candidates who are enrolled in or have recently completed a diesel program. Earning even one ASE Student Certification before applying gives candidates a measurable edge over other entry-level applicants.
Where can I find and apply to diesel technician jobs in Texas?
