E-3 Visa Principal Jobs
Principal roles in U.S. K-12 schools qualify as E-3 specialty occupations when the position requires a master's degree in educational leadership or administration. Australian educators with that credential can pursue E-3 visa sponsorship without entering the H-1B lottery, and renewals are indefinite as long as you hold a qualifying offer.

Verify your credential equivalency before applying
Australian master's degrees in education are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. degrees for E-3 visa purposes, but school districts often require a formal credential evaluation. Request a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before you start outreach.
Target districts with prior international hire experience
School districts that have previously sponsored international educators on E-3 or H-1B visas already understand the LCA filing process. Search DOL's public LCA disclosure data to identify districts that have filed for education administration roles in the past two years.
Address state licensure requirements upfront
Most states require a principal license or administrative credential before a district can place you in a leadership role. Confirm which state's licensure pathway applies to your background early, since some states offer reciprocity for overseas qualifications and others require additional coursework.
Frame sponsorship as a straightforward ask for districts
Many district HR teams are unfamiliar with the E-3 visa specifically. Clarify that the E-3 has no lottery, no annual cap pressure, and requires the employer to file an LCA with DOL rather than a full USCIS petition, which reduces their administrative burden compared to H-1B.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service once you have an offer
After a district extends an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork. This covers the DOL filing, DS-160 preparation, and consulate documentation so the district's HR team doesn't need to coordinate an immigration attorney independently.
Confirm the offer letter meets consulate documentation standards
Your consulate interview requires an offer letter that specifies your title, start date, salary, and the occupational category. Ask the district to include language confirming the role requires a master's degree in educational leadership, which directly supports the specialty occupation determination at interview.
E-3 Visa Principal: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Principal jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for Principal roles with E-3 sponsorship. It filters positions specifically for Australian nationals on E-3 visas, so you're not sifting through listings from employers who don't sponsor. From there, you can cross-reference the district's LCA history through DOL's public disclosure files to confirm prior sponsorship activity.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Principal role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes, in most cases. The E-3 requires the role to normally require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Principal positions in U.S. school districts typically require a master's degree in educational leadership, school administration, or a closely related field, which satisfies the specialty occupation standard. Districts that list the role as requiring 'a degree in any field' may not qualify, so reviewing the job description carefully before applying matters.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Australian educators seeking Principal roles?
The E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and has a 10,500 annual allocation that has never been exhausted, meaning there's no lottery and no cap pressure. H-1B applications for school district roles go through the same lottery as all other H-1B petitions, with a roughly 25 percent selection rate in recent years. For an Australian educator, the E-3 path is significantly more predictable and doesn't require waiting for a specific fiscal year registration window.
What happens to my E-3 status if the district eliminates or restructures my Principal position?
Your E-3 status is tied to the specific employer and role on your LCA. If your position is eliminated, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, change status, or depart the U.S. If another district offers you a Principal role, a new LCA and visa application are required before you begin work. Acting quickly at the start of the grace period gives you the most options.
