Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a School Counselor
Verify your credentials meet state licensing requirements
U.S. school counselor licensure varies by state. Before applying, confirm your Australian counseling qualifications satisfy the target state's requirements, as some states mandate a master's degree, which directly affects whether your role clears the specialty occupation threshold for E-3 purposes.
Target school districts with prior E-3 or H-1B sponsorship history
Many smaller districts haven't sponsored international workers before and may decline on policy grounds rather than legal ones. Focus your search on districts and private school networks that have already filed LCAs or petitions, as they understand the process and won't be starting from scratch.
Use Migrate Mate to search E-3 sponsoring employers
Finding schools actively open to E-3 sponsorship takes more than a standard job search. Use Migrate Mate to filter for school counselor roles at employers with sponsorship history, then use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork once you have an offer.
Clarify the LCA wage level with your hiring district
DOL requires the employer to pay at least the prevailing wage for your location and role. Ask HR early whether the offered salary meets the Level I or Level II wage threshold on file, since discrepancies at the LCA stage can delay or derail your start date.
Prepare a credential equivalency letter for your Australian degree
Australian bachelor's degrees are three years, and U.S. consular officers occasionally question whether they satisfy the four-year requirement. Get a written evaluation from a credential assessment body confirming your degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree before your consulate appointment.
Negotiate your start date around LCA certification timelines
DOL typically certifies LCAs within seven business days, but school districts often have rigid start dates tied to the academic calendar. Build at least three to four weeks of buffer into your offer acceptance so your employer can complete the LCA and DS-160 steps without rushing.

Find School Counselor JobsSchool Counselor E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find School Counselor jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Most job postings don't advertise E-3 sponsorship explicitly, so searching by role alone won't surface willing employers. Migrate Mate filters school counselor listings by employers with documented sponsorship activity, which cuts the time you'd otherwise spend screening districts that don't sponsor international workers. From there you can apply directly to roles where sponsorship is already on the table.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a School Counselor role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a directly related field. Roles that list a degree as preferred rather than required can be harder to qualify. If a state mandates a master's degree for licensure, that actually strengthens the specialty occupation argument because it raises the educational floor above the E-3 minimum.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian school counselors?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens and has a 10,500 annual allocation that has never been exhausted, so there is no lottery and no wait. The H-1B runs through a randomised lottery with roughly a 25 to 30 percent selection rate in recent years. For an Australian counselor with a qualifying offer, the E-3 is the direct path, and the two-year renewable structure suits the academic contract cycle.
Can I transfer my E-3 if I move to a different school district?
Yes, but you can't simply transfer the existing E-3. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new visa stamp if yours has expired, or you can request a change of employer annotation at a U.S. consulate. Start the process before your current position ends to avoid any gap in authorised employment status.
