Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Technical Writer
Verify your degree field matches the role
E-3 visa specialty occupation requires your degree to align with the specific Technical Writer position, not just any bachelor's degree. A communications or technical writing degree supports the case clearly. An unrelated degree weakens it, even with years of experience.
Target employers with dedicated technical documentation teams
Software, engineering, and medical device companies routinely hire Technical Writers as distinct staff rather than splitting duties across other roles. These employers understand the specialty occupation argument and are far more likely to file the required LCA without pushback.
Clarify the degree requirement in the job posting
Your employer's job ad must state a bachelor's degree is required, not just preferred. If the posted listing says 'preferred,' ask HR to confirm the internal requirement before filing. DOL reviews the LCA against the advertised role, not informal hiring norms.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork
The LCA must be certified by DOL before you can apply at the consulate. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to manage the LCA submission, DS-160, and consulate preparation so nothing falls through the gap between offer and appointment.
Search for E-3 sponsorship roles through Migrate Mate
Most Technical Writer job ads don't advertise visa sponsorship, but many employers will sponsor the right candidate. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with E-3 filing history so you can focus your applications where sponsorship is already an established practice.
Prepare your Australian qualifications equivalency early
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 purposes. Have your transcripts and any professional certifications ready before the offer stage so your employer's LCA filing isn't delayed waiting on documentation.
E-3 Visa Technical Writer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Technical Writer jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Most job listings don't flag E-3 sponsorship explicitly, but that doesn't mean employers won't sponsor. Migrate Mate lets you search Technical Writer roles filtered by employers with active E-3 or LCA filing history, which is a reliable signal that the company understands and will support the sponsorship process.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Technical Writer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, in most cases, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as technical communication, English, communications, or engineering. Roles where any degree is accepted, regardless of field, are harder to defend. The stronger the alignment between your degree and the job duties, the cleaner the specialty occupation argument.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian Technical Writers?
The E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and has no lottery, no annual cap, and a faster path from offer to start date. The H-1B visa runs through a random lottery with an April registration window and a typical wait of over a year. For a Technical Writer with an offer in hand, the E-3 is the faster and more reliable path by a significant margin.
Can I switch Technical Writer employers while on an E-3 visa?
Yes, but you need to restart the process with the new employer before leaving your current role. Your new employer files a fresh LCA with DOL, and you'll typically need a new visa stamp if yours has expired. The E-3 is employer-specific, so your authorization is tied to the sponsoring employer listed on your LCA and visa.
