Echocardiographer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a echocardiographer in California?
California does not issue a separate state license for echocardiographers, so the primary credential employers require is national certification through ARDMS (the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, or RDCS) or CCI (the Registered Cardiac Sonographer, or RCS). Most candidates complete an accredited two-year cardiovascular technology or diagnostic medical sonography program, earn their credential through exam, and then apply directly to hospital systems or cardiology practices.
How much do echocardiographers make in California?
Echocardiographers in California earn a median of about $128,530 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,890 for the lowest 10% to over $177,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire echocardiographers in California?
Employers hiring echocardiographers in California right now include City of Hope, University of California, San Francisco, and UCLA Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated health systems and academic medical centers account for a substantial share of postings, particularly those with dedicated cardiovascular imaging departments.
Which California cities have the most echocardiographer jobs?
Duarte, San Francisco, and Pasadena have the most echocardiographer openings in California, driven by the concentration of major hospital systems, academic medical centers, and cardiovascular specialty clinics that operate in those metropolitan areas. Positions in smaller cities often trace back to regional satellites and outpatient cardiology practices affiliated with the same large employers anchoring the top markets.
Are there remote echocardiographer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Echocardiography is a hands-on clinical role that requires direct patient contact to perform imaging studies, which limits fully remote work. About 0% of echocardiographer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve remote reading, quality review, or echo interpretation rather than hands-on scanning.
How can I get hired as a echocardiographer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to cardiac sonography internships or new-graduate training programs offered by large California health systems such as Kaiser Permanente or Cedars-Sinai, which periodically bring on candidates straight from accredited programs. Lateral moves from cardiovascular technologist or cardiac monitor technician roles within the same employer are also a common stepping stone. Completing your ARDMS or CCI credential before applying gives you a meaningful edge even with limited clinical hours on your resume.
