Internal Medicine Physician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an internal medicine physician in California?
You must earn a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, complete a three-year accredited internal medicine residency, and obtain a California Physician and Surgeon License through the Medical Board of California by passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination steps. Board certification in internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine, while not always legally required, is expected by most California employers and is a practical necessity for hospital privileges.
How much do internal medicine physicians make in California?
Internal medicine physicians in California earn a median of about $313,890 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,180 for the lowest 10% to over $441,710 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire internal medicine physicians in California?
Employers hiring internal medicine physicians in California right now include CommonSpirit Health, Sutter Health, and Spectrum Healthcare Resources, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale and the dominance of large integrated systems like Kaiser Permanente mean many openings are within multi-site organizations that hire continuously across the state.
Which California cities have the most internal medicine physician jobs?
San Diego, Lakeport, and Sacramento consistently post the most internal medicine physician openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco lead because of their concentration of academic medical centers, large multispecialty groups, and dense urban patient populations, while San Diego's mix of VA facilities, university health systems, and growing outpatient networks sustains steady demand even outside the two largest metros.
Are there remote internal medicine physician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of internal medicine physician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how fundamentally hands-on the role is. The portions most amenable to remote work are telehealth consultations, chronic disease management follow-ups, and utilization review, which some California health systems have carved into distinct telehealth-focused positions.
How can I get hired as an internal medicine physician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly for post-residency hospitalist or outpatient staff physician positions, as California's large integrated systems routinely onboard new attendings. Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and the UC Health system all recruit residents completing training at California programs into employed physician roles. Candidates strengthen their candidacy by completing California licensure before their residency ends, securing ABIM board eligibility, and pursuing a clinical quality or population health fellowship if direct openings are competitive.
Where can I find and apply to internal medicine physician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to internal medicine physician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across health systems, outpatient practices, and hospital groups. Search the listings, identify roles that match your credentials and preferred setting, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
