Internal Medicine Physician Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an internal medicine physician in Minnesota?
You must hold an active license from the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, which requires completion of an accredited medical school, a three-year internal medicine residency, and passage of all three USMLE steps. After residency, most Minnesota employers also require board certification through the American Board of Internal Medicine. Graduates pursuing fellowship subspecialties should plan for additional training before applying to attending positions at Minnesota health systems.
How much do internal medicine physicians make in Minnesota?
Internal medicine physicians in Minnesota earn a median of about $373,700 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $197,440 for the lowest 10% to over $481,170 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire internal medicine physicians in Minnesota?
Companies currently hiring internal medicine physicians in Minnesota include Fairview Health Services, HealthPartners, and Sanford Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Minnesota's large integrated systems and academic medical centers typically post a steady volume of openings across both inpatient hospitalist and outpatient clinic settings throughout the year.
Which Minnesota cities have the most internal medicine physician jobs?
Burnsville, Minneapolis, and Princeton account for the largest share of internal medicine physician openings in Minnesota. The Twin Cities metro drives volume through its concentration of large integrated health systems and academic centers, while Rochester's market is anchored by Mayo Clinic's extensive physician enterprise, and Duluth reflects demand from Essentia Health and the regional referral network serving northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Are there remote internal medicine physician jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, but they're rare. Internal medicine is a hands-on clinical specialty that typically requires in-person patient care, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 7% of internal medicine physician openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and these roles tend to involve telemedicine consultations, utilization review, or medical director functions rather than direct inpatient or outpatient practice.
How can I get hired as an internal medicine physician in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly out of residency through new-physician recruitment programs, which major Minnesota systems like Mayo Clinic, Allina Health, and M Health Fairview run annually for newly boarded or board-eligible internists. Physicians completing fellowship training in Minnesota often convert training relationships into attending offers. Candidates who lack clinical experience in a system can strengthen their candidacy by completing a Minnesota medical license before applying and targeting locum tenens assignments at rural critical access hospitals, which frequently transition strong performers into permanent roles.
Where can I find and apply to internal medicine physician jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to internal medicine physician jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current Minnesota openings. Search the listings for roles that match your specialty, seniority, and preferred location within the state, then apply directly to the positions that fit.
