Internal Medicine Physician Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a internal medicine physician in Massachusetts?
To practice as an internal medicine physician in Massachusetts, you must obtain a medical license from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine after completing medical school and an accredited internal medicine residency. The board requires verified training records, letters of reference, and passage of all USMLE or COMLEX steps. Board certification through the American Board of Internal Medicine, while not always required for licensure, is expected by most Massachusetts employers and hospital credentialing committees.
How much do internal medicine physicians make in Massachusetts?
Internal medicine physicians in Massachusetts earn a median of about $285,250 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $84,750 for the lowest 10% to over $369,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire internal medicine physicians in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring internal medicine physicians in Massachusetts right now include Optum, Mass General Brigham, and UMass Memorial Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Massachusetts's dense concentration of academic medical centers and large integrated systems means many positions include teaching and research responsibilities alongside clinical duties.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most internal medicine physician jobs?
Boston, Oak Bluffs, and Salem have the most internal medicine physician openings in Massachusetts. Boston leads because of its extraordinary density of academic medical centers and large health systems, while Worcester's growth reflects UMass Memorial Health's expanding network, and Springfield's demand is driven by Baystate Health's regional presence across western Massachusetts.
Are there remote internal medicine physician jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, but they're rare. About 7% of internal medicine physician openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the hands-on, patient-facing nature of the role. The portions most likely to carry a remote or hybrid component are telemedicine follow-up panels, utilization review, and chronic disease management consultations within larger health systems.
How can I get hired as a internal medicine physician in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a first attending position through a residency-to-employment pipeline at a Massachusetts teaching hospital. Mass General Brigham, Beth Israel Lahey Health, and UMass Memorial Health all recruit graduating residents directly into hospitalist and ambulatory roles. Physicians transitioning from a chief residency, fellowship, or a related role such as hospitalist advanced practice provider supervision also gain a competitive edge. A clean Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine application and ABIM board eligibility before your start date are the credentials that move candidates to the top of the list.
Where can I find and apply to internal medicine physician jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to internal medicine physician jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Find roles that fit your specialty, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to each one.
