Electrical Project Engineer Jobs in Rhode Island: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical project engineer in Rhode Island?
Most Rhode Island employers require a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering alongside progress toward or attainment of a Professional Engineer license issued through the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training's Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Candidates typically begin by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to earn Engineer in Training status, then accumulate qualifying experience before sitting for the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam to achieve full licensure.
Which companies hire electrical project engineers in Rhode Island?
Companies currently hiring electrical project engineers in Rhode Island include Arcfield, FM, and SAIC, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Rhode Island's defense and energy utility sectors, anchored by contractors supporting the Naval Station Newport corridor and grid operators serving the region, account for a large share of ongoing openings.
Which Rhode Island cities have the most electrical project engineer jobs?
The cities with the most electrical project engineer openings in Rhode Island are Middletown, East Providence, and Newport. Providence anchors the market as the state's largest metro and home to major utility and institutional infrastructure projects, while North Kingstown and surrounding communities benefit from the concentration of defense contractors and advanced manufacturing facilities tied to the Quonset Business Park.
Are there remote electrical project engineer jobs in Rhode Island?
Yes, but they're rare. About 10% of electrical project engineer openings tied to Rhode Island are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how site-dependent much of the work is. The portions of the role most suited to remote arrangements include design review, specification writing, and project coordination tasks that don't require physical presence on job sites or in substations.
How can I get hired as a electrical project engineer in Rhode Island with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to co-op or new-graduate rotational programs at Rhode Island's larger engineering employers, including defense contractors operating out of the Quonset Business Park and utilities like National Grid, which regularly bring on engineers in training. Building toward Engineer in Training certification through the Rhode Island Board of Registration strengthens any application, and candidates who have completed internships in power systems, building electrical, or industrial controls are well positioned for associate engineer roles that feed into full project engineer tracks.
