Embedded Software Engineer Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a embedded software engineer in Massachusetts?
Embedded software engineering in Massachusetts has no state-issued license, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skills. Most employers require at least a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science. Candidates who supplement their degree with hands-on coursework in microcontrollers, RTOS, or FPGA design are more competitive in Massachusetts's defense and medical device sectors, which favor candidates who can show real hardware project experience.
How much do embedded software engineers make in Massachusetts?
Embedded software engineers in Massachusetts earn a median of about $165,210 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $102,810 for the lowest 10% to over $213,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire embedded software engineers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring embedded software engineers in Massachusetts right now include Amazon, General Dynamics Mission Systems, and Raytheon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Massachusetts's concentration of defense contractors, medical device manufacturers, and semiconductor firms means openings appear across a wide range of industries and company sizes.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most embedded software engineer jobs?
Dedham, Westborough, and Boston have the most embedded software engineer openings in Massachusetts. Greater Boston anchors the market through its defense primes, medical device companies, and university-affiliated research labs, while suburban corridors like Waltham and Lowell are home to established semiconductor and aerospace employers that generate consistent embedded engineering demand outside the city core.
Are there remote embedded software engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely software-focused fields because embedded work often requires hands-on access to hardware, lab equipment, and prototypes. About 21% of embedded software engineer openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. The roles most likely to offer remote flexibility are those focused on firmware development, software integration testing, or simulation work that doesn't require physical board access.
How can I get hired as a embedded software engineer in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a co-op or internship at a Massachusetts defense, medical device, or semiconductor employer before graduation, since companies like Raytheon Technologies, Boston Scientific, and Analog Devices run structured programs that regularly convert to full-time roles. Candidates without that background can move from adjacent positions in hardware test engineering, electronics technician roles, or IT systems work while building a portfolio of personal microcontroller or FPGA projects. A relevant bachelor's degree combined with demonstrated embedded coursework remains the clearest credential that opens doors.
Where can I find and apply to embedded software engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to embedded software engineer jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Find the roles that fit your experience and apply directly.
