We are looking for a Principal Embedded Software Engineer to lead a team of engineers to design, create, and improve tools, processes, and software for today and for the future.

The person in this role will work as part of a team developing embedded software for medical devices related to breast and skeletal health.
In addition to technical skills, we are looking for someone to be a strong technical leader within the division. They should deeply understand and adhere to good coding practices and be able to effectively mentor junior engineers. We expect them to partner with management to improve team processes and efficiency. The most successful person in this role exhibits a high degree of technical excellence, is collaborative, and takes initiative to do what is best for the product and customer.
The ideal candidate will be able to work on-site in Newark, Delaware or Marlborough, MA, flexibly 3-4 days per week.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain and expand on an expert level of understanding of our products and their use in clinical practice, using this knowledge to maintain these products as well as specify, design, develop and test our next generation products.
- Own and lead the design, development, and documentation of software components and systems for new products, features, or functionality. Participate in high level architectural discussions and take ownership of defining requirements and developing corresponding specifications and procedures.
- Develop and maintain software under an Agile/Scrum/Continuous Integration methodology.
- Own and lead the identification, design, and implementation of required software testing to ensure features are properly tested. Collaborate with Test Engineering leaders to understand functionality and for the development and support of testing plans.
- Own the identification, diagnosis, prioritization, and correction of technical issues. Implement and track solid corrective actions to reduce defects and failures or optimize and streamline manufacturing processes. Ensure on time delivery of work products.
- Actively initiate collaboration with the service team on key product design elements, their operation, and how to use them properly.
- Drive continuous improvement across architecture, scalability, and performance quality.
- Own system level documentation to ensure that all safety, functional and third-party requirements are captured.
- Create and execute, in partnership with Architects & Product Management, the Application Architecture Strategy and Roadmap for their responsible area.
- Provide input and support for risk assessments (SFMEA & PFMEA); evaluate and develop process control data as applicable to component, subsystem, and system level testing.
- Create and manage engineering change orders.
- Function in a technical leadership role and identify and lead complex technical projects that are cross functional or interdepartmental that drive meaningful product development or improvements. Effectively coordinate and delegate responsibilities. Supervise work activities and support personnel to meet project objectives.
- Develop project communication plans and provide regular communication and updates on success factors such as progress, schedule, budget, project risks and resource or needs gaps.
- Recognized cross functionally as a go to technical expert and act as lead for assigned products and subsystems. Establish collaborative relationships with all stakeholders within the site and create links with experts within the Hologic network and outside. Lead collaborative efforts and the building of interorganizational networks.
- Function as an SME for relevant areas of expertise.
- Identify and drive implementation of organizational improvements, “best practices” project improvements and higher engineering maturity. Drive increased velocity of feature and product delivery through simplification and automation. Identify key metrics and monitor to ensure architecture progression.
- Participate in professional development and stay current with new test technology and processes while actively seeking to implement new technology.
- Provide consistent, dependable guidance and mentoring to senior engineers to promote learning, development, and knowledge transfer.
- Own system level, software related documentation to ensure that all safety, functional and third-party requirements are captured.
- Identify and lead complex technical projects.
- Participate in the interview process for hiring new team members when/if necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Preferred Minimum Technical/Advanced Degree: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field.
Experience
- Preferred Minimum Technical Degree: 12+ Years
- Preferred Minimum Technical/Advanced Degree: 10+ Years with Master’s Degree, 8+ Years with PhD
- Extensive experience in embedded systems development, including RTOS-based design (e.g., FreeRTOS, QNX, Zephyr), low-level firmware development, device drivers, and board initialization, with strong expertise in hardware/software integration.
- Proven experience designing and optimizing real-time, resource-constrained systems, including performance tuning, deterministic behavior, and implementation of communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN), as well as secure boot and firmware update mechanisms.
- Extensive experience and demonstrated success in commercial product development with different products over the product lifecycle.
- Experience in supporting safety-critical device manufacturing and applicable government regulations such as FDA, FAA, SEC, etc.
- Demonstrated experience taking ownership of corrective actions.
- Experience with safety-critical software systems in a highly regulated environment is beneficial.
SKILLS
- Comprehensive, expert knowledge of complex software design principles, algorithms, data structures, design patterns, and multithreading concepts. Ability to expertly implement design patterns and author software requirement specifications.
- Expert programming skills using C/C++ and Assembler-level programming languages in an embedded environment.
- Expert debugging skills; Expert in troubleshooting and resolving complex issues.
- Expert in using and troubleshooting version control software (such as Git, Perforce, Azure Dev Ops, SVN, or other).
- Expert analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in communicating complex technical details with both technical and non-technical audiences. Adapts communication style to suit different audiences. Creates precise, accurate technical documentation.
- Excellent interpersonal skills - Ability to lead and motivate a team; Collaborate cross functionally; Efficiently direct and coordinate the work of others.
- Strong contributor to high performing team. Ability to simultaneously manage multiple large-scale projects. Demonstrated ownership in executing project plans and meeting deadlines.

COMPENSATION
The annualized base salary range for this role is $139,400 – $232,300 and is bonus eligible. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on factors including relevant experience, skillset, knowledge, geography, education, business needs and market demand.
