Engineering Intern Jobs in San Diego: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a engineering intern job in San Diego?
Focus your search on Sorrento Valley and Torrey Pines, where defense contractors, biotech firms, and wireless technology companies cluster and hire interns regularly. Candidates with hands-on lab experience, proficiency in CAD or embedded systems, and coursework tied to life sciences or aerospace engineering stand out in this market. Applying directly through company career pages and attending UCSD or SDSU engineering career fairs gives you a concrete edge locally.
Which companies hire engineering interns in San Diego?
Employers hiring engineering interns in San Diego right now include General Atomics, WSP, and Intuit, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. San Diego's hiring base skews toward mid-size defense primes, medical device manufacturers, and telecom hardware companies that run structured intern programs tied to university recruitment cycles.
Are there remote engineering intern jobs in San Diego?
Yes, though remote availability is limited for hands-on lab and hardware roles, which make up a large share of San Diego engineering intern openings. About 50% of engineering intern openings tied to San Diego are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with flexibility concentrated in software integration, data engineering, and systems simulation work rather than bench or fabrication roles.
How can I get a engineering intern job in San Diego with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Diego is through university cooperative programs at UCSD, SDSU, or USD, where biotech companies and defense contractors actively recruit first-year interns without requiring prior work history. Local research institutes and mid-size hardware startups in Kearny Mesa also hire project-based interns. Completing a relevant capstone project, contributing to an open-source engineering tool, or earning a relevant certification in CAD or PCB design strengthens your candidacy considerably.
Which industries hire the most engineering interns in San Diego?
San Diego engineering intern roles concentrate in Technology & Software and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. San Diego's deep base of defense contractors along the I-15 corridor, its nationally significant biotech cluster in Torrey Pines, and its legacy in wireless and semiconductor technology through companies built from Qualcomm's ecosystem all drive sustained intern demand across those sectors.
