Product Development Intern Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a product development intern in California?
The most direct path is pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering, industrial design, business, or a related field at a California university, then applying to structured intern programs during your junior or senior year. Product development internships in California do not require a state-issued license. Building a portfolio of class projects, hackathon work, or personal prototypes strengthens applications considerably, especially for competitive programs at major Bay Area and San Diego technology companies.
Which companies hire product development interns in California?
Employers hiring product development interns in California right now include TikTok, Whatnot, and Molex, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of technology headquarters, medical device firms, and consumer goods companies means intern programs here often feed directly into full-time new-graduate hiring pipelines.
Which California cities have the most product development intern jobs?
San Jose, San Francisco, and Los Angeles have the most product development intern openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its concentration of technology and hardware headquarters, San Diego draws heavily from its biotech and wireless semiconductor clusters anchored by companies like Qualcomm and the many life sciences firms in the Torrey Pines corridor, and Los Angeles reflects growing activity in consumer products, entertainment technology, and aerospace.
Are there remote product development intern jobs in California?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely software-focused roles because product development work often involves physical prototyping, lab access, or in-person collaboration with engineering and design teams. About 25% of product development intern openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote arrangements most common for the research, market analysis, and documentation portions of the role rather than hands-on build phases.
How can I get hired as a product development intern in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to formal intern programs at large California employers such as Apple, Google, or Medtronic, which run structured new-student cohorts that do not require prior industry experience. University-sponsored design competitions, engineering capstone projects, and student product clubs at UC campuses and Cal Poly provide portfolio material that substitutes for work history. Lateral entry from adjacent campus roles in UX research, supply chain analysis, or quality assurance is also a recognized path at many California companies.
Where can I find and apply to product development intern jobs in California?
You can find and apply to product development intern jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
