Consulting Intern Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a consulting intern in California?
Most consulting intern roles in California require enrollment in or recent completion of a bachelor's or master's program in business, economics, engineering, or a related field. California does not require a state license for general management consulting internships. Candidates strengthen their applications through coursework in analytics or strategy, case interview preparation, and networking with California-based firms through university recruiting programs at UC Berkeley, UCLA, and USC.
How much do consulting interns make in California?
Consulting interns in California earn a median of about $101,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,360 for the lowest 10% to over $174,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire consulting interns in California?
Employers hiring consulting interns in California right now include RH, EY, and KPFF Consulting Engineers, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of technology companies, financial institutions, and healthcare systems means intern demand stretches well beyond traditional consulting firms into in-house strategy and operations teams.
Which California cities have the most consulting intern jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose have the most consulting intern openings in California. San Francisco leads due to its concentration of technology and financial services firms, Los Angeles draws volume from entertainment, media, and healthcare consulting practices, and San Diego's life sciences and defense sectors sustain consistent intern demand at both global firms and regional boutiques.
Are there remote consulting intern jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many other internship categories. About 36% of consulting intern openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the analytical and desk-based nature of much consulting work. Research, modeling, and slide development tasks transfer well to remote settings, though client-facing project phases and team workshops are typically conducted in person.
How can I get hired as a consulting intern in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through structured campus recruiting programs at California universities, where firms like Deloitte, PwC, and KPMG run formal internship pipelines targeting students without prior consulting experience. Candidates without internships can gain an edge by completing case interview preparation through university consulting clubs, pursuing analytical roles in adjacent functions such as financial analysis or operations, and building a project portfolio through pro bono consulting programs offered by nonprofits and student organizations across the state.
