Engineering Jobs in Richmond: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a engineering job in Richmond?
Focus your search on Richmond's defense and government contracting firms along the Route 288 corridor, utilities and energy companies serving the region, and the civil and structural engineering practices supporting the city's ongoing infrastructure investment. Candidates with experience in transportation, water systems, or federal project compliance stand out locally. Networking through the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers Richmond chapter connects you directly to the hiring managers at firms where openings rarely get widely posted.
Which companies hire engineerings in Richmond?
Companies currently hiring engineerings in Richmond include Stantec, STV, and Capital One, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Richmond's employer mix skews toward defense primes, Dominion Energy and its supply chain, and mid-size civil and environmental engineering consultancies serving state and municipal clients.
Are there remote engineering jobs in Richmond?
Yes, though availability depends heavily on the discipline: software and systems engineering roles are frequently remote or hybrid, while structural, civil, and field-based roles almost always require an on-site presence. About 50% of engineering openings tied to Richmond are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, skewing toward defense IT and data systems work. Analytical and design-heavy roles at Richmond's larger contractors tend to offer the most scheduling flexibility.
How can I get a engineering job in Richmond with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Richmond is through co-op and internship pipelines at Dominion Energy and the regional defense contractors, which regularly convert program participants into full-time hires. Look for junior engineer, engineering technician, and field inspector roles at mid-size civil and environmental consultancies working on Richmond's transportation and utilities projects. A Virginia Tech or VCU degree carries local recognition, and volunteer project work with the city's infrastructure initiatives builds a portfolio that resonates with Richmond hiring managers.
