INTRODUCTION
Shape the Future of Water Infrastructure Across New England
This is not a traditional project management role. WSP is seeking a recognized municipal water leader who can grow client relationships, win strategic work, and lead delivery of some of the region's most important water and wastewater programs.
As a Senior Project Manager / Client Service Leader, you will serve as a trusted advisor to municipal and utility clients while helping expand our presence throughout Massachusetts and New England. You will have access to a deep national bench of technical experts — allowing you to focus on client leadership, project success, and market growth.
Why This Role Is Different
Massachusetts is in the midst of a major infrastructure investment cycle. MassDEP compliance obligations, PFAS response programs, aging conveyance and treatment infrastructure, and the push toward comprehensive asset management are driving capital programs across the Commonwealth. WSP is actively building its presence in this market — and this role is the platform to lead that growth. You will not be inheriting a mature book of business and managing the status quo. You will be shaping it.
- Opportunity to build and expand a growing practice rather than simply manage projects
- Significant autonomy to develop clients, pursue opportunities, and shape market strategy
- Access to national technical resources and subject matter experts
- Clear pathway toward Client Director, Practice Leader, and Regional Leadership roles
- Develop and strengthen executive-level relationships with municipal water and wastewater clients, utilities, and state agencies
- Lead business development, strategic positioning, capture planning, proposals, interviews, and contract negotiations
- Serve as Project Manager or Program Manager on major treatment, conveyance, pumping, resiliency, and asset management programs
- Collaborate with regional and national technical leaders to deliver exceptional client outcomes
- Mentor project managers and technical staff
- Represent WSP through NEWEA, MWWA, AWWA, ACEC, and regional industry events
- Help shape growth strategy for the New England water market
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- PE license required
- 12+ years of municipal water/wastewater consulting experience
- Established relationships with Massachusetts municipalities, utilities, and MassDEP
- Demonstrated success winning and delivering complex infrastructure programs
- Strong executive presence and client-facing leadership skills
- Experience managing multidisciplinary teams across planning, design, and construction phases

Engineering Leader Jobs in Boston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a engineering leader job in Boston?
Target Boston's densest hiring corridors: Kendall Square for biotech and deep-tech firms, the Seaport for enterprise software and fintech, and the Route 128 corridor for defense and aerospace companies. Candidates who demonstrate cross-functional team leadership, a history of scaling engineering organizations, and familiarity with regulated industries stand out most in this market. Networking through local tech communities and university alumni networks also opens doors quickly here.
Which companies hire engineering leaders in Boston?
Employers hiring engineering leaders in Boston right now include Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, and WSP, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Boston's hiring mix leans heavily toward life sciences companies, enterprise SaaS firms, and defense contractors, many of which maintain large local engineering organizations and promote from within.
Are there remote engineering leader jobs in Boston?
Yes, though with limits, since engineering leader roles often require in-person presence for team management, architecture reviews, and cross-departmental collaboration. About 15% of engineering leader openings tied to Boston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements being far more common than fully remote. The most remote-compatible work tends to involve strategy, vendor oversight, and program planning rather than hands-on team leadership.
How can I get a engineering leader job in Boston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a senior individual contributor role at a Boston-area startup or mid-size software company and stepping into informal team lead responsibilities before seeking a formal title. Boston's dense startup ecosystem in Kendall Square and the Seaport regularly promotes strong senior engineers into first-time leadership positions. Gaining experience managing a small team on a high-visibility project, even informally, builds the case needed to compete for titled engineering leader roles.
Which industries hire the most engineering leaders in Boston?
Boston engineering leader roles concentrate in Healthcare & Medical Services, Consulting & Professional Services, and Technology & Software, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Boston's combination of world-class research hospitals, top-tier universities, and a mature venture capital ecosystem sustains deep, ongoing demand for engineering leadership across those sectors year-round.
