Environmental Analyst Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental analyst in California?
Most environmental analyst positions in California require at least a bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, chemistry, or a related field. While California does not mandate a single statewide license to work as an environmental analyst, many employers prefer candidates who hold a Registered Environmental Assessor credential or are working toward a Professional Geologist or Professional Engineer license through the California Department of Consumer Affairs. HAZWOPER certification is commonly required for positions involving hazardous waste.
Which companies hire environmental analysts in California?
Employers hiring environmental analysts in California right now include Environmental Systems Research Institute, Eurofins, and Environmental Systems Research Institute, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense network of consulting firms, utility companies, and state regulatory agencies means consistent year-round hiring, particularly for analysts with CEQA compliance and site remediation experience.
Which California cities have the most environmental analyst jobs?
Redlands, Santa Barbara, and West Sacramento have the most environmental analyst openings in California. Los Angeles draws the highest volume of postings due to its size and the concentration of large infrastructure, aerospace, and energy projects, while Sacramento is a hub for state agency and regulatory work, and San Francisco benefits from major environmental consulting firms and tech-sector sustainability initiatives in the Bay Area.
Are there remote environmental analyst jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited. About 24% of environmental analyst openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the fact that much of the work involves field sampling, site inspections, and in-person regulatory meetings. The tasks most likely to be performed remotely include report writing, data analysis, GIS mapping, and document review for CEQA compliance.
How can I get hired as a environmental analyst in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for field technician or environmental scientist I roles at large California environmental consulting firms such as AECOM, Stantec, or Arcadis, which regularly hire new graduates for supervised fieldwork. California state agencies, including the Department of Toxic Substances Control and the State Water Resources Control Board, post entry-level environmental scientist positions open to recent graduates. Completing a HAZWOPER 40-hour certification and gaining GIS proficiency before applying gives candidates a concrete edge over others without field experience.
Where can I find and apply to environmental analyst jobs in California?
