Environmental Attorney Jobs in Richmond: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a environmental attorney job in Richmond?
Focus your search on Richmond's three strongest hiring lanes: state agency work tied to Capitol Square, private firms serving industrial clients along the James River corridor, and environmental consulting firms embedded in the West End. Candidates who understand Virginia's Department of Environmental Quality processes and have handled permitting, Superfund, or stormwater matters hold a clear edge over those with only generalist backgrounds.
Which companies hire environmental attorneys in Richmond?
Companies currently hiring environmental attorneys in Richmond include Onterris, Burns & McDonnell, and AECOM, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Richmond's hiring mix skews toward regional law firms with regulatory practices, utilities navigating energy transition requirements, and industrial manufacturers managing state and federal compliance obligations.
Are there remote environmental attorney jobs in Richmond?
Yes, though with limits, since environmental attorney work often requires site visits, agency appearances, and in-person client meetings that are difficult to do remotely. About 24% of environmental attorney openings tied to Richmond are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting broader flexible-work trends. Research, regulatory writing, and document review tasks are the parts of the role most commonly performed off-site.
How can I get a environmental attorney job in Richmond with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Richmond is a staff attorney or law clerk role at a state agency such as the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality or the Attorney General's environmental section, both headquartered near Capitol Square. Local environmental consulting firms also hire junior attorneys for compliance support work. Clerking experience, a thesis or clinic project in environmental law, and familiarity with Virginia's regulatory code give new graduates a concrete advantage over candidates without local regulatory exposure.
Which industries hire the most environmental attorneys in Richmond?
Most environmental attorney openings in Richmond sit in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Energy, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Richmond's role as Virginia's capital concentrates regulatory and compliance demand there, drawing hiring from state government, utilities managing coal ash and water permits, and industrial manufacturers responding to tightening federal and state environmental standards.
