Environmental Field Technician Jobs in North Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental field technician in North Dakota?
Most environmental field technician positions in North Dakota require at minimum an associate degree in environmental science, geology, chemistry, or a closely related field, with a bachelor's degree preferred by larger consulting firms. North Dakota does not require a state-specific environmental technician license, but employers consistently require 40-hour HAZWOPER certification before fieldwork begins. Registering as a professional geologist through the North Dakota State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors strengthens candidacy for senior sampling and site assessment roles.
Which companies hire environmental field technicians in North Dakota?
Employers hiring environmental field technicians in North Dakota right now include State of North Dakota, Apex Engineering, and Ulteig, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. North Dakota's Williston Basin oil activity and state-level remediation contracts keep environmental consulting firms and energy companies among the most consistent sources of technician openings throughout the year.
Which North Dakota cities have the most environmental field technician jobs?
Bismarck, Fargo, and Dickinson have the most environmental field technician openings in North Dakota. Bismarck draws openings from state agency work and consulting firms serving the Missouri River corridor, Fargo concentrates private consulting and agricultural water quality work, and Williston is driven directly by Williston Basin oil and gas operations that require ongoing soil and groundwater monitoring.
Are there remote environmental field technician jobs in North Dakota?
Yes, but they're rare. About 30% of environmental field technician openings tied to North Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that most of the work is hands-on field sampling and site inspection that cannot be performed off-site. The portions of the role most likely to be done remotely are data entry, report writing, and regulatory documentation review between field assignments.
How can I get hired as a environmental field technician in North Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to field technician assistant or environmental technician I roles at consulting firms like AECOM or TRC Companies, which regularly bring on graduates with completed HAZWOPER training even before full professional experience. North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota both offer environmental science programs whose career offices connect students directly with internship postings at state agencies and private consultancies. A completed 40-hour HAZWOPER card and familiarity with GPS data collection tools are the credentials that most quickly move entry-level applicants past the initial screening.
Where can I find and apply to environmental field technician jobs in North Dakota?
You can find and apply to environmental field technician jobs in North Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and location, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
