Mid Level Environmental Scientist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level environmental scientist job?
Position yourself by highlighting project ownership rather than task completion. Employers hiring at this level want to see that you've managed deliverables, coordinated with regulators or clients, and made technical decisions independently. Tailor your resume to show specific projects you led, reports you authored, and any specialized methods or permits you've worked with. Certifications like HAZWOPER or a state environmental certification strengthen your application.
Which companies hire mid level environmental scientists?
Companies hiring mid level environmental scientists right now include Burns & McDonnell, Kimley-Horn, and HDR, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. At this experience level, hiring comes from a mix of environmental consulting firms, engineering companies, energy producers, and government contractors that need scientists capable of running projects with real autonomy.
Are there remote mid level environmental scientist jobs?
Yes, though the role is field-intensive enough that fully remote work is less common than in purely office-based fields. About 11% of mid level environmental scientist openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, typically covering report writing, data analysis, and regulatory documentation. Roles involving site investigation, sampling, or field inspection generally require in-person presence at least part of the time.
How do I move up to a mid level environmental scientist role?
The path from entry level to mid level is built by taking on progressively larger responsibilities over your first few years. That means moving from assisting on projects to coordinating them, developing fluency in a specialty area like remediation, air quality, or wetlands, and building a record of delivering reports and regulatory submissions independently. Earning a professional certification or state licensure and demonstrating measurable impact on project outcomes accelerates the transition.
Which industries hire the most mid level environmental scientists?
Mid Level environmental scientist roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Government & Public Sector, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive demand because they face ongoing regulatory compliance requirements, environmental impact assessments, and remediation obligations that call for scientists experienced enough to work with limited supervision.
