Mid Level Research And Development Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level research and development engineer job?
Position yourself around project ownership rather than task execution. Highlight work where you drove a design from concept through validation, resolved ambiguous technical problems independently, or improved a process with measurable results. Applications that show you have moved beyond following instructions and into shaping outcomes stand out most to hiring managers at this level.
Which companies hire mid level research and development engineers?
Companies hiring mid level research and development engineers right now include KPMG, Eisai, and Nemours, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Hiring at this level covers large manufacturers and technology firms running active R&D programs as well as growth-stage companies scaling their engineering teams.
Are there remote mid level research and development engineer jobs?
Yes, though lab-intensive roles often require on-site presence for equipment and testing. About 8% of mid level research and development engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with remote options more common in software-focused R&D, data analysis, and systems engineering than in hands-on prototype or materials work.
How do I move up to a mid level research and development engineer role?
The move from entry level to mid level comes from accumulating ownership, not just time. Engineers who take on complete workstreams, document their findings clearly, contribute to design reviews, and demonstrate that their work improved a product or process build the profile hiring managers look for. Deepening expertise in a specific domain, such as materials, signal processing, or embedded systems, accelerates that progression.
Which industries hire the most mid level research and development engineers?
Mid Level research and development engineer roles concentrate in Accounting & Auditing, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Biotechnology & Pharmaceuticals, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Those sectors drive hiring at this level because their product pipelines depend on engineers who can independently advance research from early-stage investigation through to functional prototypes or deployable systems.
