How do you become a executive director of development in California?
Most executive director of development roles in California require a bachelor's degree, with many employers in higher education and healthcare preferring a master's in nonprofit management, public administration, or business. There is no state-issued license for this role, but earning the Certified Fund Raising Executive credential demonstrates professional standing and is widely recognized by California nonprofits, universities, and hospital foundations when evaluating senior candidates.
How much do executive director of developments make in California?
Executive director of developments in California earn a median of about $79,710 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $50,340 for the lowest 10% to over $131,720 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire executive director of developments in California?
Employers hiring executive director of developments in California right now include Sage Hospitality, University of California Berkeley, and California State University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of large research universities, regional hospital networks, and established nonprofit organizations makes it one of the most active states for senior development hiring year-round.
Which California cities have the most executive director of development jobs?
San Francisco, Berkeley, and Mountain View have the most executive director of development openings in California. Los Angeles dominates because of its sheer density of nonprofits, arts institutions, and hospital systems, while San Francisco draws heavily from technology-sector philanthropy and major research institutions, and San Diego's strong healthcare and biomedical presence drives consistent demand at organizations such as UC San Diego Health and regional community foundations.
Are there remote executive director of development jobs in California?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields because relationship management, donor cultivation events, and board engagement typically require in-person presence. About 23% of executive director of development openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The portions of the role most suited to remote work are grant writing, prospect research, and individual donor communications rather than major gift cultivation.

The most realistic entry path is securing a development associate or development coordinator role at a mid-size California nonprofit, community foundation, or university advancement office, then building toward a manager or director title.
