Forward Deployed Software Engineer Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a forward deployed software engineer in Illinois?
The most direct path is a four-year computer science or software engineering degree from an Illinois university such as the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern, or Illinois Tech, followed by a software development role at any company that serves external clients. Illinois does not require a state-issued license for this role. Employers typically look for hands-on coding experience, exposure to enterprise tools, and evidence that you have worked alongside customers or implementation teams.
How much do forward deployed software engineers make in Illinois?
Forward deployed software engineers in Illinois earn a median of about $132,110 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,980 for the lowest 10% to over $194,740 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire forward deployed software engineers in Illinois?
Employers hiring forward deployed software engineers in Illinois right now include PwC, Palantir Technologies, and Databricks, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's dense concentration of enterprise software, financial services, and defense firms means demand stays active even outside the peak Chicago hiring season.
Which Illinois cities have the most forward deployed software engineer jobs?
Chicago and Schaumburg have the most forward deployed software engineer openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the bulk of demand through its large enterprise software and fintech employers, while cities like Champaign and Schaumburg contribute openings tied to technology company campuses, defense contractors, and university-affiliated research spinouts that rely heavily on on-site customer support.
Are there remote forward deployed software engineer jobs in Illinois?
Yes, though they are less common than in purely desk-based engineering roles, since forward deployed work often requires direct on-site engagement with customers. About 43% of forward deployed software engineer openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with most of those being hybrid arrangements. The portions of the role most amenable to remote work include scoping calls, documentation, and internal build cycles between customer deployments.
How can I get hired as a forward deployed software engineer in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a solutions engineer or technical support associate role at a Chicago-area software company, which builds both the coding and the customer-facing skills employers expect. Large Illinois technology employers including Salesforce and Morningstar run structured new-graduate associate and rotational programs that place early-career engineers in customer-facing tracks. Building a portfolio of deployed projects and contributing to open-source integrations also helps candidates stand out when applying to companies that serve regulated industries such as financial services or healthcare.
